Day 1 - Barcelona - Girona - Besalu - Colliure - Carcassonne
Welcome to a captivating journey through northern Catalonia. We begin our adventure in Barcelona, setting off towards Girona, a city rich in medieval architecture, influenced by Roman, Arab, and Hebrew cultures. Here, immerse yourself in the stunning historic centre – a true architectural treasure – and consider visiting the Cathedral of Saint Mary, a striking Gothic building perched in the city’s heights. The old Jewish quarter, with its narrow, enchanting lanes, offers a glimpse into Girona’s storied past.Our next destination is the delightful medieval town of Besalú, perfect for exploring its charming streets, the impressive stone bridge, the castle, Jewish baths, and the old pilgrim hospital. Lunch provides the perfect opportunity to savour the local atmosphere. Continuing our journey, we arrive in French Catalonia at the picturesque coastal town of Collioure. Nestled along the Mediterranean, this town is known for its lovely beach and vibrant port. Wander through narrow alleyways and visit the striking castle, originally established on an ancient Roman fort and once the court of the kings of Mallorca. Poetry enthusiasts might take an interest in the tomb of Antonio Machado.In the evening, we reach Carcassonne, touted as Europe’s most magnificent fortified city. We recommend a nighttime stroll to admire the beautifully illuminated walls before settling in for dinner at one of the charming eateries within the Citadelle. Please note: This tour may have travellers joining or departing at various points along the route, meaning group composition can change during the tour. Please also be aware that depending on group composition, guiding may be in additional languages as well as English.
Day 2 - Carcassonne - Narbona - Marseille
We begin our day in Carcassonne with a guided visit to the formidable Castle of the Counts, where admission is included, and the medieval walls. You'll then have some free time to delve into Carcassonne's enchanting streets at your leisure. Post-lunch, we’ll make our way to Narbonne, a delightful Occitan city renowned for its attractive historic centre. In the evening, we arrive in Marseille, France's lively second-largest city. We suggest wandering around the bustling Vieux Port, an area brimming with energy and lined with numerous quaint restaurants.
Day 3 - Marseille - Arles - Avignon - Lyon
On our third day, we immerse ourselves in the stunning landscapes and rich history of Provence. Our journey begins in Arles, a city recognised by UNESCO for its exceptional Roman and medieval heritage, and famously captured in the works of Van Gogh. We then proceed to Les Baux, where we explore this enchanting medieval village and experience the Carrières de Lumières. This breathtaking underground show uniquely blends art, imagery, and sound within ancient quarries. Afterward, we will have some time to enjoy a leisurely lunch and wander through Avignon, famed for the remarkable Palais des Papes. We conclude our day in Lyon, where we will walk through its historic old town, another UNESCO World Heritage Site, and ascend by cable car to the striking Notre-Dame de Fourvière basilica. Here, you can admire sweeping views over the city. Please note, if Carrières de Lumières tickets are unavailable due to closure or high demand, we will instead visit the remarkable Pont du Gard Roman aqueduct.
Day 4 - Lyon - Tournus - Savigny Castle - Beaune - Dijon
As we depart from Lyon, we head to the picturesque Burgundy region. Our first destination is Tournus, a charming town renowned for its imposing stone gate and impressive abbey. From there, we travel to Beaune, the heart of Burgundy's wine country, where we have time for lunch and exploration. We recommend visiting the wine museum or exploring the historic hospice. Our adventure continues with a visit to Savigny Castle, nestled in the heart of wine country. This 15th-century castle houses fascinating museums that showcase motorbikes, racing cars, planes, and helicopters. Finally, we journey to Dijon, the capital of Burgundy, celebrated for its vibrant streets and numerous medieval and Renaissance buildings, including the magnificent Palace of the Dukes.
Day 5 - Dijon - Besancon - Colmar - Riquewihr - Strasbourg
While still in the Burgundy region, we will visit Besançon, a city with Roman roots, renowned for its charming historic centre and its 17th-century citadel overlooking the town. From there, we move on to Alsace, a region historically contested between France and Germany. Here, the local culture bears the marks of its Germanic past, including the Alsatian dialect and distinct architectural styles. Our first destination in Alsace is Colmar, known for its striking architecture, colourful half-timbered houses, and winding canals. Colmar is also celebrated for its white wines and culinary heritage, so you'll have some time to enjoy lunch and take a leisurely stroll around the area. In the afternoon, we’ll head to Riquewihr, one of Alsace’s most picturesque medieval towns, with cobblestone streets and vibrant houses that inspired scenes from Beauty and the Beast. Here, we will visit a traditional winery for a tasting of local wines paired with a typical sweet. As evening approaches, we will arrive in Strasbourg. We suggest a walk around the cathedral area and Petite France, both brimming with charming locales and inviting restaurants.
Day 6 - Strasbourg - Fribourg - Triberg - Gengenbach - Baden-Baden
Today we begin our adventure in Strasbourg, the captivating capital of Alsace and the seat of the European Parliament. This picturesque city invites you to stroll through its enchanting medieval streets, admire its breathtaking Gothic cathedral, and meander along canals that are adorned with vibrant blossoms. To truly appreciate the beauty of Strasbourg, we’ve arranged a boat trip through the picturesque Petite France area. After soaking up the French charm, we’ll venture into Germany, traversing the stunning mountainous landscape and delightful villages of the Black Forest.Our stop in Freiburg provides the opportunity for you to enjoy lunch and explore this vibrant university town, celebrated for its historical centre and magnificent cathedral. Continuing our journey through the scenic Black Forest, we make our way to Triberg, a picturesque town renowned for its charming cuckoo clocks. Here, we include a visit to the Triberg Waterfalls—the tallest in Germany. A leisurely walk will lead you to these natural wonders, offering a refreshing experience in the heart of nature.Before heading to our destination for the night, Baden-Baden, we’ll pause in the delightful town of Gengenbach for a quick photo opportunity. This charming location boasts a beautiful central square perfect for a few snapshots. Our day concludes in Baden-Baden, a sophisticated spa town renowned for its history as a retreat for European aristocrats. With its elegant casinos, stunning architecture, and inviting parks, Baden-Baden provides a luxurious backdrop for an evening of relaxation and exploration.
Day 7 - Baden-Baden - Speyer - Heidelberg - Frankfurt
We begin our day with some free time in Baden-Baden, where you can unwind with a leisurely walk through the serene parks. Following this, we make our way to the scenic region of Rhineland-Palatinate. Our first stop is Speyer, a city steeped in history along the banks of the Rhine River. Here, you'll have the opportunity to visit the impressive Romanesque cathedral, recognised as a UNESCO World Heritage Site, and explore the charming old quarter with its notable building, the Alte Münze.Next, we journey to Heidelberg, where a cable car will whisk us up to the magnificent castle, providing stunning vistas of the city below. Your ticket here includes entrance to the castle's beautiful gardens, historic wineries, and the intriguing apothecary museum. After exploring, you'll have time for lunch and can enjoy a relaxed walk through Heidelberg’s old town, with highlights like the bustling Marktplatz.In the afternoon, we travel to Frankfurt, Germany's dynamic financial centre, recognisable by its towering modern skyscrapers and well-preserved historic old town. As we conclude our day, we'll gather in a traditional beer garden in the heart of the city at Römerberg Square. Here, you can savour a classic German experience by enjoying a tasting of local beer accompanied by Frankfurt sausage and sauerkraut.
Day 8 - Frankfurt - Luxembourg - Reims - Paris
Today, we'll embark on an enchanting journey to France. Our first destination is the Grand Duchy of Luxembourg, a small, yet diverse country where both German (in the form of Luxembourgish) and French are widely spoken. Upon our arrival in Luxembourg City, you'll discover a seamless fusion of historical charm and contemporary flair. The city, a significant hub for European institutions, boasts a rich heritage with highlights such as the UNESCO-listed old town, the city's impressive fortifications, the Grand Ducal Palace, and the Notre-Dame Cathedral. After lunch, we will proceed further into France, heading towards the renowned Champagne region. We'll pause in Reims, a city celebrated for its magnificent Gothic cathedral, the historical stage for countless French royal coronations. Our day concludes with our arrival in Paris by evening, ready to explore more of its iconic allure.
