Rolling hills and tea gardens of Munnar

Trips and Tours to Munnar

About Munnar

Set amidst dramatic mountain scenery, the hill town of Munnar, in the state of Kerala, sits at an altitude of 1524m and forms the commercial centre of some of the world’s highest tea-growing estates. It’s easy to see why Scottish planters who first developed this hidden valley in the 1900s felt so at home here with the cool weather and eerie mists that envelop the lush mountainsides. Raj-ophiles will enjoy spotting the many British bungalows that cling to the side of verdant valleys alongside the famous High Range Club with its manicured lawns and golf course, and the Stone Church built in 1910 to commemorate the memory of early planters with brass plaques.

The region offers plenty of enjoyable walks and scenic bike rides which afford breathtaking views of the surrounding lofty peaks. From many locations in Munnar it's possible to see Anamudi, which, at 2695m above sea level, is South India’s highest peak. Bikes can be hired in town at various locations. In addition to acres of tea plantations, there is a Tea Museum, which offers lots of information on the production process of this prime crop and displays relics from the early 1900s including photographs and an original tea-roller.

Just beyond Munnar lies Eravikulam National Park, home to the rare and almost tame Nilgiri Tahr, a type of mountain goat endemic to the Niligir Hills in India. To protect the Nilgiri Tahr during calving season, the park is closed for around six weeks from mid-January. For the more active adventurer, the Rajamalai Hills, within the park's borders, also offer fantastic hiking opportunities.
