Inspirations for a holiday in Peru
You've hiked the Inca Trail to Machu Picchu, spend a night surrounded by the wilderness of the Amazon Rainforest, danced the night away in Cusco, mingled with the locals on Lake Titicaca and are now looking for some more unique experiences in Peru. Have a read of our list below with a few inspirational ideas to make your trip one of a kind.
We are all familiar with piranhas as a predator, with their bulging eyes, sharp teeth, powerful jaws and insatiable appetite. In the Amazon you can flip roles and go fishing for this unique species of fish – bait them with fresh bloody steaks, hear the grunt and snapping of jaws as you pull them out of the water and let your experienced guide cut them loose. Later donate your fresh catch to a local village to cook up for dinner.
As one of the deepest canyons in the world, where in places it is impossible to see the valley floor from the canyon edge, Colca Canyon will no doubt leave you impressed. But what really makes any visit here unforgettable are the resident condors – the sight of these majestic birds drifting through the canyon walls with their 10-foot wing span is something you’ll never forget.
Etched into the desert landscape on the coast of Peru, the strange and mysterious Nazca Lines are one of Peru’s greatest mysteries. The Nazca lines and geometrical figures include a monkey, hummingbird, condor, spider and even a spaceman. The motifs are spread over 500 square kilometres, completed in one continuous line and are best observed from above by flight.
Located offshore of Pisco, the Ballestas Islands are brimming with animal and bird life and are well worth a day trip. Cruise around the islands and spot herds of noisy sea lions lazily lounged on the rocks, watch as dolphin and playful seals splash in the water around the boat, get a glimpse of pelicans, boobies and cormorant or other resident bird life.
