Day 1 - Shanghai
Upon your arrival in China, we'll ensure a smooth transfer to your hotel in Shanghai. This vibrant metropolis, boasting a population of over 15 million, stands as China’s largest commercial port and its most international city. As you settle in, take in the dynamic atmosphere of this bustling city, which beautifully blends traditional culture with modern innovation. Enjoy your first impressions of Shanghai – a city famed for its remarkable skyline and rich cultural tapestry. Please note: This tour may have travellers joining or departing at various points along the route, meaning group composition can change during the tour. Please also be aware that depending on group composition, guiding may be in additional languages as well as English.
Day 2 - Shanghai
Today, we set off on an exciting exploration of Shanghai. Our day begins in Pudong, the city's vibrant financial hub nestled across the Huangpu River, renowned for its towering skyscrapers, including the iconic Pearl Tower. Next, we embark on a scenic ferry ride across the Shanghai River, offering us stunning vistas of the city's contrasting historic and modern architecture.Afterwards, we take a leisurely stroll through the Old City, where we'll visit the tranquil Yuyuan Garden. This elegantly preserved space, a testament to the Ming Dynasty’s architectural prowess, is where we'll also participate in a traditional tea ceremony, providing a fascinating insight into China's rich cultural heritage.Our adventure continues in the fashionable district of Xintiandi, celebrated for its chic boutiques, inviting cafés, and lively ambience. After a delightful lunch, included in our itinerary, we will delve into Tianzifang. Known for its intricate alleyways, this former residential area is now a haven of charming craft shops and contemporary art galleries.As the day winds down, we conclude our explorations with a leisurely walk along The Bund. Here, the grand colonial-era buildings serve as a majestic reminder of Shanghai’s historical ties with European trade. The afternoon is yours to enjoy at your leisure. For an unforgettable experience, consider booking a night-time boat excursion to witness the city’s stunning skyline illuminated against the evening sky.
Day 3 - Shanghai - Luoyang
On the third day, we begin with an early morning transfer to the train station to board a high-speed train, departing at 07:17 a.m. Covering a distance of 1,000 kilometres in just over five hours, we travel through charming landscapes, offering views of the picturesque countryside en route to Luoyang. Lunch is included during this leg of the journey. Our exploration of Luoyang starts with a visit to the magnificent Longmen Buddhist Caves, an extensive complex that runs along a kilometre of river cliffs. Here, you'll find over 100,000 impressive statues and carvings of Buddha etched into the stone, making it one of China's most significant archaeological treasures. To enhance our experience, we'll enjoy a scenic boat ride along the river, allowing us to fully appreciate this extraordinary site. Later, we head into the ancient city of Luoyang, where we pass through its grand walls to discover streets bathed in light, brimming with traditional character and lively local life.
Day 4 - Luoyang - Longmen - Sanmexia - Xian
In the early morning, we explore the outskirts of Luoyang with a visit to the White Horse Buddhist Monastery, a distinguished centre of Buddhist learning that attracts scholars and practitioners worldwide. Our journey continues to Sanmenxia, a city steeped in history. Here, we marvel at the grand Yellow River and visit Baolun Temple, renowned for its impressive towering pagoda. We will also tour the acclaimed Guo Museum, considered among the finest in China, where we'll delve into the past with a look at the ancient funeral carriages of the former State of Guo. After enjoying our included lunch, we head eastward past the revered Mount Hua, one of China's most sacred mountains, celebrated for its dramatic peaks and spiritual importance. By late afternoon, we'll arrive in Xian, where our day's adventure concludes.
Day 5 - Xian
We have arrived in Xi'an, a city steeped in history as the starting point of the ancient Silk Road. Our morning begins with a visit to the remarkable Terracotta Army. This incredible archaeological site features thousands of life-sized clay soldiers that have stood guard over the tomb of China’s first emperor for centuries. Returning to Xi'an, we will visit the centuries-old Small Wild Goose Pagoda, a striking Buddhist structure. Our exploration of the city continues within its historic walled centre. Here, we'll wander through the bustling Muslim Quarter and visit the Great Mosque, a testament to the rich cultural and religious tapestry of China. Our tour includes a stop at the Drum Tower, where we will experience a brief performance of traditional Chinese music played on ancient instruments. Following these activities, you will have free time to explore the area at your own pace, venturing into the heart of Xi'an to discover its wonders firsthand.
Day 6 - Xian
