Itinerary
Day 1 - Paris
On arrival in Paris we organise your transfer to the hotel, after which you have free time. In the afternoon we outline the start of the tour – either in person or via notices at reception.
Please note: This tour may have travellers joining or departing at various points along the route, meaning group composition can change during the tour. Please also be aware that depending on group composition, guiding may be in additional languages as well as English.
Day 2 - Paris
We step into French history at the Palace of Versailles – admission not included – celebrated for its magnificent gardens. Returning to Paris, we explore Montmartre, the bohemian quarter of artists, painters and cabarets, then take a panoramic tour with a local guide to admire grand avenues and emblematic monuments before heading back to the hotel.
Day 3 - Paris - Rouen
We begin in central Paris at the Eiffel Tower, with tickets included for the second floor, followed by a leisurely cruise on the Seine. You have the afternoon free to explore. Around 16:00 we set off for Normandy and arrive in Rouen, where you have time to discover its historic centre of Roman origin, medieval streets and soaring Gothic cathedral. Note: if queues at the Eiffel Tower are excessive, we may adjust the timing – possibly to Sunday – for your convenience.
Day 4 - Rouen - English Channel - Canterbury - London
This morning we stroll Rouen’s centre before travelling north through France. We cross the English Channel by ferry to reach Canterbury, England’s ecclesiastical capital with a charming historic core, then continue to London. You have free time around Tower Bridge – one of the city’s great icons – before we go to the hotel.
Day 5 - London
We discover London on a panoramic tour with a local guide, passing the Houses of Parliament, the River Thames and Buckingham Palace, where the Changing of the Guard may be seen subject to dates. In the evening we meet in Piccadilly for a walk through Leicester Square, Chinatown and Soho – lively districts of theatres and entertainment – with ample dining choices before returning to the hotel.
Day 6 - London - Cambridge - York - Durham
We depart London for the north, pausing in Cambridge to admire its beautiful colleges. After lunch we continue to York, whose magnificent Minster, Roman walls and animated lanes impress – you have free time to explore. We then carry on to Durham, a superb medieval city crowned by its cathedral opposite the castle.
Day 7 - Durham - Alnwick - Edinburgh
We travel into Scotland, stopping in Alnwick – famed for its gardens and grand medieval castle seen in the Harry Potter films – then reach Edinburgh around midday. The Scottish capital’s monumental centre is a UNESCO World Heritage Site, watched over by the castle. We take a panoramic tour with a local guide.
Day 8 - Edinburgh - Inverness - Loch Ness - Fort Augustus - Glasgow
An exhilarating day through the Highlands begins with coffee and a stroll in Pitlochry. We pass through Inverness near the mysterious Loch Ness, visit Urquhart Castle – admission included – and embark on a boat ride on its dark waters. We continue via Fort Augustus with its sluices and Fort William at the foot of Ben Nevis, then head south across high plateaus – often snow–flecked – and along the shores of Loch Lomond to arrive in Glasgow late in the day. Important note: for groups arriving in Edinburgh from 15 November to the end of February, shorter days and frequent snow mean an adjusted route – 08:00 departure to Pitlochry (09:45–11:15) with a visit to a traditional whisky distillery – admission included – then on to Stirling (12:30–15:30) to visit the formidable castle – tickets included. After lunch we stop to photograph The Kelpies and continue to Glasgow, arriving around 17:00 with time to stroll in the centre.
Day 9 - Glasgow - Belfast - Dublin
We leave Glasgow for southern Scotland to board the ferry at Cairnryan and sail to Northern Ireland, arriving in Belfast, the capital emerging from past divisions with fine monuments. We then continue into the Republic of Ireland, reaching Dublin by day’s end.
Day 10 - Dublin
We start with a panoramic tour of Dublin, a tranquil capital where we follow the River Liffey, its parks, historic university and lively central streets, and view the exterior of Trinity College. You have the afternoon free. Note: depending on arrival time and daylight, the tour may run the previous afternoon.
Day 11 - Dublin - Caernarfon - Liverpool
Early this morning we board a ferry and, after around three to three and a half hours, arrive in Wales. Our first stop is Caernarfon, a seaside World Heritage town dominated by its mighty castle – time for lunch and a stroll – before continuing to Liverpool for a brief bus tour of this World Heritage port. You can visit The Beatles museum if you wish.
Day 12 - Liverpool - Stratford - Oxford - London
We explore England’s heartlands, beginning in Stratford–upon–Avon, Shakespeare’s birthplace, where you have free time for lunch and discovery. We then travel to Oxford, renowned for centuries of scholarship and culture, before continuing to London in the evening.
Day 13 - London - Colchester - Colchester - Volendam Ferry
In the morning we visit the British Museum – one of the world’s oldest – to trace civilisations from across the globe. At lunchtime we head to Camden, famed for its vibrant market, where you can browse and eat at its many stalls and small restaurants. Around 16:00 we depart for Colchester – England’s oldest recorded town – for a leisurely stroll, then continue to Harwich to board the overnight ferry to the Netherlands, staying in en suite cabins. Important note: cabin availability is limited, so the route may be adjusted – for example a daytime ferry with an overnight in Antwerp, or travel by train or flight to Amsterdam.
Day 14 - Colchester - Volendam Ferry - Volendam - Amsterdam
Around 08:00 we arrive in the Netherlands at Hoek van Holland and continue to Volendam, a charming fishing village. We then travel to Amsterdam for a guided tour that blends highlights – the classic windmill view and Rembrandt statue, the stylish South district and the long tradition of diamond cutting around Museum Square. The tour ends at the central station, where the guide provides information for you to explore the canals and markets.
Day 15 - Amsterdam - Hamelin - Berlin
We leave Amsterdam for Germany, stopping first in Hamelin – a pretty town whose streets recall the Pied Piper tale – then continue via Marienborn, the former border between East and West Germany until 1990, reaching Berlin in the evening.
Day 16 - Berlin
We immerse ourselves in Berlin on a guided tour of Germany’s remarkable capital, taking in Museum Island, the Television Tower, major shopping streets, the old cathedral ruined in the war, the Brandenburg Gate, the Reichstag and expansive parks. We pause at the Holocaust Memorial and the Berlin Wall Memorial Museum – sobering reminders of the last century. You have the afternoon free, and in the early evening we provide a transfer to lively Kantstrasse.
Day 17 - Berlin
After breakfast our journey concludes, leaving you with wonderful memories.
