Day 1 - Berlin - Wolfsburg - Celle - Hannover
Welcome to your tour of Germany as we begin our journey in the vibrant city of Berlin. Today, we travel to Lower Saxony, with our first stop in Wolfsburg, a city established in 1938 primarily for the employees of the Volkswagen factory. Known for its automotive heritage, we will visit Autostadt, an intriguing complex dedicated to cars, featuring extensive gardens and fascinating exhibitions. Enjoy time to stroll and have lunch while immersing yourself in this unique celebration of automotive history.Our adventure continues to Celle, a charming town celebrated for its beautifully preserved half-timbered houses from the 16th and 17th centuries. Take the chance to wander through the ancient streets and marvel at the magnificent Renaissance castle that stands proudly amidst its historic surroundings.In the mid-afternoon, we arrive in Hannover, the capital of Lower Saxony. This city is a significant hub of economic, cultural, and scientific activity, seamlessly blending historical architecture with modern structures. You'll find ample time to explore Hannover's extensive parks and cultural landmarks at your leisure. We will stay overnight here, giving you the opportunity to unwind and prepare for the next day's experiences. Please note: This tour may have travellers joining or departing at various points along the route, meaning group composition can change during the tour. Please also be aware that depending on group composition, guiding may be in additional languages as well as English.
Day 2 - Hannover - Goslar - Gottingen - Bad sooden-allendorf - Eisenach
Following breakfast, we set off for the historic Rammelsberg Mines near Goslar, a significant silver mining site that operated continuously from the Middle Ages. Designated a UNESCO World Heritage Site, these mines provide a captivating insight into the region's industrial history. We'll visit the museum, where we delve into the lives of the miners and the enduring legacy of this remarkable site. Our journey continues to Goslar itself, celebrated for its enchanting medieval old town, also a UNESCO World Heritage Site. You'll be charmed by its immaculately preserved half-timbered houses, quaint cobbled streets, and the magnificent Church of St. Peter.As we move on to Göttingen, known for its vibrant academic and scientific community, you'll have the opportunity to enjoy lunch and wander leisurely through its delightful historic centre. In the afternoon, we traverse the region of Thuringia, pausing in the charming spa town of Bad Sooden, beautifully nestled among forested hills. Known for its well-preserved timber-framed architecture, this peaceful spot is a true hidden gem.Later, we arrive in Eisenach, a town rich in Baroque and Renaissance architecture, and steeped in history. It boasts the Bach House, the birthplace of the illustrious composer, and Luther's House, significant in the life of the Protestant Reformer. Dinner is included, rounding off your day of exploration and discovery.
Day 3 - Eisenach - Gotha - Erfurt - Leipzig
We begin our day with a visit to the remarkable Wartburg Castle, a UNESCO World Heritage Site. Situated high above Eisenach, this historic fortress offers an exploration of German history, famously being the site where Martin Luther translated the New Testament into German. The castle also boasts stunning panoramic views of the surrounding landscape.After our castle visit, you'll have the opportunity to explore Eisenach independently. Consider visiting the Bach House, the birthplace of Johann Sebastian Bach, if music interests you. Alternatively, the Automobile Museum provides a fascinating look at vintage vehicles and is located in what was once the main factory of East Germany's car industry.Our journey continues to Gotha, where we appreciate the exterior of its majestic Baroque palace and take a leisurely stroll through the town's charming historic centre. We then proceed to Erfurt, the capital of Thuringia, renowned for its impressive cathedral and well-preserved medieval old town. One of the city's highlights is an enchanting bridge with houses that have been continuously occupied for over 500 years.By late afternoon, we will arrive in Leipzig, a city rich in both cultural and historical significance. Known for its connections to renowned composers such as Bach and Wagner, Leipzig played a critical industrial role during the GDR era and now thrives as a vibrant city with a population of over half a million.
Day 4 - Leipzig - Dresden - Meissen - Moritzburg - Berlin
Departing Leipzig, we visit the monumental Battle of Nations Memorial, a towering 91 metres-high tribute to a pivotal Napoleonic battle, inaugurated in 1913. Our journey then takes us to Dresden, the capital of Saxony, celebrated for its splendid Baroque and Renaissance architecture. As we stroll along the banks of the Elbe River, we can admire the city’s grand palaces and picturesque landscapes.The nearby city of Meissen awaits, world-famous for its porcelain craftsmanship, a tradition established in the 18th century. You’ll have the opportunity to explore the charming old town, energised by its impressive castle and cathedral, and to pause for lunch at your leisure.In Moritzburg, we’ll wander the grounds of “Cinderella’s Castle,” a stunning palace surrounded by an artificial lake and lush gardens. Our final leg of the journey takes us back to Berlin, where we'll arrive around 7:00 p.m. As your tour concludes, we hope the experiences of these remarkable locations stay with you long after the journey's end. Please check your flight schedule in advance in case an extra night in Berlin is required.
