Day 1 - Athens
Welcome to Athens, the starting point of your adventure! After your arrival, we will ensure a smooth transfer to your hotel, leaving you with some leisure time to settle in and explore your surroundings. Later, check the hotel reception boards for essential information about the beginning of your journey. Enjoy a relaxing first day in this historic city. Please note: This tour may have travellers joining or departing at various points along the route, meaning group composition can change during the tour. Please also be aware that depending on group composition, guiding may be in additional languages as well as English.
Day 2 - Athens
Today, we immerse ourselves in the vibrant history and modern charm of Athens with a city tour guided by a knowledgeable local. Discover the elegance of the Presidential Mansion and the historic significance of the Panathenaic Stadium, the site of the first modern Olympic Games. As we meander through the city, we'll also view the impressive National Library and the lively city centre squares, vital to Athens' bustling atmosphere. Our exploration extends to newer neighbourhoods that have flourished since the 2004 Olympic Games. Our tour concludes with a visit to the iconic Acropolis, though please note that admission is not included. In the evening, we'll whisk you away to the historic neighbourhood of Plaka, renowned for its delightful Greek tavernas and a perfect opportunity to experience the rich folklore of the country.
Day 3 - Athens - Kamena Vourla - Kalabaka
On the third day of our journey, we set off early in the morning towards northern Greece. Our first stop is the delightful seaside town of Kamena Vourla, framed by stunning landscapes that provide a refreshing start to the day. Continuing north, we pause at the historic Thermopylae Mountain Pass, the famed location of the legendary battle that stood the test of time. Our next destination is Kastraki, a charming village offering remarkable views across the valley. Here, you have free time to enjoy lunch at your leisure. In the afternoon, we visit the Meteora, an awe-inspiring UNESCO World Heritage Site, where you can marvel at one of its renowned monasteries with admission included. As the day wraps up, we provide dinner in Kalambaka, offering a perfect end to our explorations.
Day 4 - Kalabaka - Thessaloniki - Melnik - Sandanski
Today we travel through the stunning mountain landscapes of northern Greece en route to Thessaloniki, the nation's second-largest city. Here, you'll have time to explore and enjoy lunch amidst this vibrant urban hub. We then head north, crossing the border into Bulgaria's Macedonian region. Our next stop is Melnik, a quaint, historical town celebrated for its picturesque setting and distinguished wine production. The day concludes in Sandanski, a charming spa town reputedly the birthplace of Spartacus. We'll settle here for the night, with dinner included to cap off the day's adventures.
Day 5 - Sandanski - Rila - Sofia
Today, we will visit the remarkable Rila Monastery, a UNESCO World Heritage Site famed for its striking, fortress-like structure, nestled amidst lush forests. Following this captivating visit, we'll head to Sofia, reaching the Bulgarian capital by late morning. After lunch, you'll join us for a guided tour of the city, where we’ll wander through its rich history and dynamic present. Highlights include the imposing St. Alexander Nevsky Cathedral, the ornate Russian Church, and the city's central squares adorned with imposing Stalinist architecture. In the afternoon, you'll have the freedom to delve further into Sofia's vibrant scene at your own pace.
Day 6 - Sofia
On day six, following a delightful breakfast, our journey concludes. Reflect on the wonderful experiences and lasting memories you've gained throughout the tour.
