Day 1 - Keflavik to Reykjavik
On arrival at Keflavik, collect the rental car and set out for Reykjavik, crossing the Reykjanes Peninsula. The road leads through broad lava fields - a stark volcanic landscape softened by moss, with distant mountains on the horizon - offering an immediate introduction to Iceland's geology. The drive is around 50 km - 31 miles. Spend the first night in Reykjavik.
Day 2 - Thingvellir National Park - Geysir - Gullfoss - Hveragerði
Leave Reykjavik and drive the Golden Circle, beginning at Þingvellir National Park - a UNESCO World Heritage site noted for its geological and historical significance. Continue to the Geysir geothermal area to witness its active geysers and steam vents, then on to Gullfoss, where the falls plunge into the depths below. Carry on to Fluðir, known for its hot springs and greenhouses, and finish the day in Selfoss. Driving distance approx 200 km (124 miles) - overnight in the Hveragerði/Selfoss area.
Day 3 - Selfoss to Keflavik
Depart from your lodging and drive to Keflavik International Airport. Cross the Reykjanes Peninsula and return the rental car at the airport, bringing your Icelandic journey to a close. Driving distance is approximately 50 km - 31 miles.
