Day 1 - Osaka
Welcome to Japan! Upon your arrival in Osaka, we will arrange for a transfer to your hotel, allowing you some leisure time to unwind. In the afternoon, we'll meet to share details about your upcoming adventure. Please note: This tour may have travellers joining or departing at various points along the route, meaning group composition can change during the tour. Please also be aware that depending on group composition, guiding may be in additional languages as well as English.
Day 2 - Osaka - Koyasan (Mount Koya)
Departing Osaka at 11:30 am, we journey to the revered Mount Koya, the foremost centre for Shingon Buddhism in Japan. This enchanting pilgrimage site is home to 120 temples and monasteries. Our first stop is the Okuno Mausoleum, a profound spiritual location and expansive cemetery set within serene natural surroundings, featuring over 200,000 graves. We then explore Kongobuji Temple, established in 1593.Tonight, we will spend the night in a Buddhist monastery, enhancing our experience as the monks lead us through a Zen meditation session known as Ajikan. A vegetarian dinner will be provided. For those interested, there's an opportunity to join the religious ceremony at the temple prior to breakfast.Please note, during winter months when daylight is shorter, we may not have the opportunity to see the interior of Kongobuji Temple. Accommodation in the monastery is considered a deeply cultural experience, characterised by traditional Japanese style rooms with tatami mats, shared bathrooms, and a simple aesthetic. During busy tourist periods, meditation sessions cannot always be guaranteed. Due to limited accommodation on Mount Koya, it might sometimes be necessary to lodge in nearby hotels, but rest assured that your board will be included.
Day 3 - Koyasan (Mount Koya) - Kyoto
We begin our third day with a traditional Japanese breakfast at the tranquil temple. Early in the morning, we depart for Kyoto, a city that once served as Japan's capital from 794 to 1868 and housed the Imperial Court. Remarkably spared from the bombings of World War II, Kyoto today is a testament to Japan's exquisite artistic and cultural heritage. It is also famous for hosting the signing of the Kyoto Protocol on greenhouse gas emissions in 1997.Our exploration includes some of Kyoto's most iconic sites. We admire the revered Shinto Shrine of Fushimi Inari with its famous torii gates, explore the historic grounds of the Imperial Palace, and then marvel at the stunning Kinkaku-ji Temple, fondly known as the "Golden Pavilion," complemented by its beautiful gardens. You'll have a chance to soak in the atmosphere during some free time before we proceed to Gion, a vibrant traditional district renowned for its Geisha culture. Here, you'll have additional free time to wander and absorb the unique ambiance. Please note, if you've visited Kyoto previously as part of your tour, our guide will happily offer suggestions to help you explore other parts of this captivating city.
Day 4 - Kyoto - Tokyo
After breakfast, we'll transfer you to the station for the iconic bullet train ride to Tokyo. Covering nearly 500 kilometres in just over two hours, this journey is a remarkable experience in itself, showcasing the speed and efficiency of Japan’s Shinkansen network. Upon arrival in Tokyo, you’ll have the rest of the day to explore the city at your own pace, discovering its vibrant neighbourhoods, world-class shopping, and rich culinary scene. Whether you're interested in the bustling streets of Shibuya, the historic temples of Asakusa, or simply wish to indulge in some people-watching from a cosy café, Tokyo offers endless opportunities for exploration and enjoyment.
Day 5 - Tokyo
In the morning, we’ll embark on a captivating guided tour of Tokyo lasting around five hours. This bustling city harmonises cutting-edge technology with serene traditional spaces. Our first stop is Zojoji Temple, where you'll have the opportunity to capture a quintessential view of the iconic Tokyo Tower. The temple's grounds are adorned with colourful knit-capped Jizo statues, believed to be guardians of children. We then proceed to the renowned Shibuya Crossing, famed as the busiest intersection globally, followed by a visit to the Meiji Shrine, dedicated to Emperor Meiji and his wife. Our tour continues with a bus journey along the stylish Omotesando Avenue, leading us to the elegant grounds of the Imperial Palace, where you can admire the famous Nijubashi Bridge. We'll pass through Akihabara, also referred to as "Electric Town," a vibrant hub for manga and anime enthusiasts, before driving past the Kokugikan, Japan's celebrated sumo wrestling arena. Our exploration ends in Asakusa at the historic Sensoji Temple and the bustling Nakamise Street, where a local restaurant lunch awaits. Later, at 6:30 p.m., we'll reconvene with our guide in the hotel lobby to venture via metro to the vibrant Shinjuku district. Here, we'll stroll through lively streets known for their dynamic nightlife, eventually making our way to a local restaurant for an included dinner. Our guide will accompany us on the metro back to the hotel afterward.
Day 6 - Tokyo - Nikko - Sendai
Today, we leave Tokyo for Nikko, arriving around 10:30 a.m. Our first stop is the magnificent Nikko Toshogu Shrine, known for its "Crying Dragon" room, a marvel of acoustic architecture. From there, we continue to the Taiyuinbyo Mausoleum, set in a truly serene and impressive location. We then take a leisurely walk by the river at Kannanga Fuchi, where hundreds of Jizo statues stand watch beside the path, creating a tranquil and contemplative atmosphere. You'll have some free time to explore the charming city centre before we head to Sendai. This modern city, home to over one million people, buzzes with life, and you'll have the opportunity to immerse yourself in its vibrant streets and enjoy dinner in the bustling urban setting.
Day 7 - Sendai - Matsushima - Hiraizumi - Morioka
Today, we set off for the enchanting town of Matsushima, renowned for its stunning "Thousand Islands" Bay, a true gem on the Pacific Ocean and one of Japan's most picturesque spots. Upon arrival, we visit a charming tea house overlooking the bay. Here, we'll enjoy traditional tea while our guide provides captivating insights into the area's history and culture. Our exploration continues with a delightful 50-minute cruise, complete with lunch on board, allowing us to fully appreciate the natural beauty of the surroundings. Afterward, we travel to Hiraizumi, rich in history and home to remarkable temples. Our visit begins with the awe-inspiring Takkoku no Iwaya, a UNESCO World Heritage Site intricately carved into a rock face in 801. We then take in the splendour of the Buddhist temples of Chusonji, followed by some tranquil time in the serene gardens of Motsuji Temple. Here, you can partake in a Zen ceremony, which is included in your visit.We conclude our day in Morioka, the delightful capital of Iwate Prefecture. Settling into our hotel, you'll have some free time to explore this charming city, allowing it to reveal its unique character.
Day 8 - Morioka - Hirosaki - Aomori - Hakodate
As we journey through breathtaking landscapes, we'll make our way to Hirosaki, where we'll explore the iconic castle nestled within a park renowned for its stunning spring displays of over 2,500 cherry blossom trees. From there, we continue to Aomori, the capital of Mutsu Bay. During our visit, we'll delve into the vibrant festival traditions of Japan at the Nebuta Museum, which showcases beautifully painted and illuminated floats reminiscent of carnival celebrations. We'll enjoy lunch at a local restaurant before boarding a ferry to cross over to the island of Hokkaido. This scenic journey, lasting just over three and a half hours, brings us to Hakodate. Upon arrival, we'll wander through its charming historic district, where we can admire cultural landmarks such as the Russian Orthodox Church and other Christian churches.
Day 9 - Hakodate - Onuma - Noboribetsu - Sapporo
Our morning begins with a visit to the vibrant and bustling fish market in Hakodate, providing a fascinating insight into the local culture. At Goryokaku Tower, we’ll be treated to breathtaking panoramic views and can admire the star-shaped design of Hakodate's historic fortress. You’ll have some free time to explore the castle area before we continue our adventure to Onuma. Set amidst a magnificent natural landscape dotted with numerous small islands, you’ll have the chance to take a boat ride or enjoy a leisurely stroll along one of the scenic trails. Lunch is included at a delightful local restaurant. In the afternoon, we’ll travel along the coastline to Noboribetsu, home to awe-inspiring volcanic vistas. Here, we’ll walk among the steam vents of Jigokudani – aptly named Hell Valley – and marvel at the misty waters of Lake Oyunuma. We’ll then follow the trail along a hot spring river to a serene spot where you can indulge in a relaxing foot bath. Later, we’ll journey to Sapporo, arriving in the evening in this beautiful northern capital of Japan.
Day 10 - Sapporo
Today, we'll embark on a city tour of Sapporo, beginning with a visit to the iconic Clock Tower. We'll then stop at Odori Koen, a beautiful park-lined avenue dominated by the towering Sapporo TV Tower. Following this, we'll visit the Hokkaido Jingu Shinto Shrine, where we'll participate in a Kito, a traditional ceremonial prayer to express gratitude for our journey.Our exploration takes us to the outskirts of Sapporo to admire the Hill of Buddha, known for its avant-garde architecture. This site features a massive Buddha statue atop a lavender-covered hill, and within the complex, we can also find replicas of the famous Moai statues from Easter Island.We will then make our way to Otaru, a charming town with a European flair, where you can explore lively shopping streets, enjoy a stroll along the historic canal, and discover quaint museums. Lunch is included at a local restaurant during our visit.We'll return to Sapporo around 3:30 p.m., allowing you the rest of the afternoon to explore at your leisure. Whether you choose to continue exploring the city's vibrant cultural scene or simply relax, the choice is yours.
