Day 1 - Nairobi to Karatina & Aberdare National Park Safari
Nairobi - Karatina - Aberdare National Park - Solio Ranch. We collect you from Nairobi airport or your Nairobi hotel and set off early for Aberdare National Park – a scenic drive through the Central Kenya highlands. We pause to view tea and coffee plantations, and make a further stop at Karatina to experience East Africa’s largest open air market.
Aberdare National Park is home to elephants, leopards, spotted hyenas, olive baboons, black and white colobus monkeys, warthogs and bushbucks. Rare sightings here include giant forest hog, bongo, golden cat, serval cat, African wild cat, African civet cat and blue duiker. We end the day with dinner and an overnight stay at Rhino Watch Lodge or similar, located between Aberdare and Solio Ranch.
Day 2 - Rhino Safari in Solio Ranch
After breakfast we head into Solio Ranch - established in 1970 after starting as a cattle ranch in 1966. It's now the world’s largest white rhino sanctuary with an additional black rhino population and over 200 rhinos in total. With Mount Kenya’s peaks often peeping through the clouds, we spend the day on game drives across the conservancy.
Expect frequent rhino encounters - southern white rhinos dominate - alongside black rhinos. Other wildlife we may see includes Hilgert’s vervet monkey, Thomson’s gazelle, impala, African buffalo, Defassa waterbuck, olive baboon, Beisa oryx, eland, warthog, slender mongoose, reticulated giraffe and steenbok. Birdlife is notable too, with grey crowned cranes and eagles among the species recorded. Dinner and overnight at Rhino Watch Lodge or similar.
Day 3 - Return to Nairobi
Solio Ranch - Nairobi. This morning we wake to the bush, enjoy breakfast and check out before we drive back to Nairobi. On arrival, we drop you at your city hotel. If you wish to extend your holiday, you can add time in the Maasai Mara or on the sandy beaches of Watamu.
