Set off in Madrid and wrap up in London on this 13–day rail–and–road adventure across Spain, France and England. You’ll explore Madrid’s grand boulevards and tapas corners, visit La Mancha villages and, in Andalusia, expect to see Granada’s Moorish legacy, seaside Nerja, cliff–top Ronda and riverside Seville – with a gentle cruise on the Guadalquivir. Continue via Zaragoza and Poblet Abbey to Barcelona’s modernist icons and lively waterfront, then glide by high–speed train to Paris for Versailles, Montmartre, the Eiffel Tower and a Seine cruise. Itinerary
Day 1 - Madrid
Welcome to Madrid. On arrival at the airport, we’ll transfer you to your hotel. You’ll have free time until the tour begins – please check the information board at reception for details of the welcome meeting with your guide and fellow travellers. In the evening, we’ll provide a transfer to Plaza Mayor and La Latina – the historic heart of the city’s tapas and nightlife scene. You can choose where to dine, with plenty of options including Spanish, Indian, Chinese and Middle Eastern cuisines.
Please note: This tour may have travellers joining or departing at various points along the route, meaning group composition can change during the tour. Please also be aware that depending on group composition, guiding may be in additional languages as well as English.
Day 2 - Madrid
We begin with a panoramic tour of central Madrid, taking in the Paseo del Prado, the Cibeles and Neptuno fountains, the Puerta de Alcalá, Plaza de Colón and Plaza Mayor. We then head to El Retiro Park in the city centre to see the lake and the Palacio de Cristal. Admission is included to the Santiago Bernabéu Stadium – home of Real Madrid and considered by many to be the best football club in the world. You have the rest of the afternoon at leisure to explore as you wish. In the evening, we provide a return transfer to the hotel.
Day 3 - Madrid - Granada
We depart Madrid early and head south through La Mancha. Our first stop is Puerto Lápice, a traditional Manchego village associated with the tales of Don Quixote. We then continue through Despeñaperros into Andalusia and arrive in Granada, where lunch is included.In the afternoon, if you have chosen the Alhambra option, we visit the Alhambra Palace and the Generalife Gardens with a local guide – both built during the Arab period.Important note – visitor numbers at the Alhambra are strictly regulated by law. To secure entry, tickets are issued when your tour reservation is confirmed, and you must provide accurate personal details at booking, including your full name and passport or ID number. Ticket costs are not refundable if you cancel. In the rare event the Alhambra visit is not possible, we will instead tour the Royal Alcázar of Seville.
Day 4 - Granada - Nerja - Malaga - Ronda - Seville
Leaving Granada, we travel out of the Sierra Nevada and along the Mediterranean, on the stretch known as the Tropical Coast, where a mild year‑round microclimate supports guavas, mangoes and avocados, and once sugar cane. We stop in Nerja to admire its seaside setting and cliffs, then continue to Málaga, capital of the Costa del Sol. You’ll have time for lunch and a stroll through the historic centre. In the afternoon, we head into the Andalusian sierras to reach Ronda, a striking white town divided by a dramatic gorge. We then continue to Seville, arriving in the late afternoon – dinner is included at the hotel.
Day 5 - Seville - Zaragoza
We begin with a panoramic tour of Seville – taking in Seville Cathedral and the Giralda, the banks of the Guadalquivir, and the characterful districts of Santa Cruz and Triana. After the tour, we enjoy a boat ride on the Guadalquivir – Spain’s only major navigable river. In the afternoon, we transfer you to the station for the high speed train to Zaragoza, scheduled to depart around 4:30 pm and covering roughly 850 km in just under four hours. On arrival in Zaragoza, we provide a transfer to your hotel. Please note the train sector is unescorted by our tour team.
Day 6 - Zaragoza - Poblet - Barcelona
This morning we take a panoramic tour of Zaragoza with a local expert, beginning at the Cathedral Basilica of Our Lady of the Pillar. We also explore the legacy of Goya and view some of his works before continuing to the Roman theatre and a Renaissance palace, finishing with a stroll by the Aljafería Palace.After lunch we head into Catalonia to visit Poblet Abbey – an impressive walled monastery in a scenic setting and one of the best-preserved medieval monasteries in the world. Entry is included.We then continue to Barcelona, arriving in the evening.
Day 7 - Barcelona
This morning we take a panoramic tour of Barcelona – a Mediterranean city celebrated for Gaudí and modernist architecture, its lively Ramblas, and the legacy of its World Expositions and Olympic Games. The tour ends at Maremagnum, a modern waterfront leisure and dining complex by the sea next to Columbus Square, where you can stroll through this vibrant area. The afternoon is at leisure. We return to the hotel at the end of the day.
Day 8 - Barcelona - Paris
At the scheduled time, we’ll transfer you to the station for your included high–speed train from Barcelona to Paris. The journey takes just over six hours. On arrival, we’ll meet you for a transfer to your hotel. Your guide will get in touch in the evening, or you can check the information signs at reception for updates. Please note – the train journey is unaccompanied by a tour guide.
Day 9 - Paris
Today we delve into France’s history at the Palace of Versailles – admission not included – with time to enjoy its renowned gardens. We then return to Paris to visit Montmartre, a bohemian neighbourhood known for its artists, painters and cabarets. To appreciate the city’s breadth, we continue with a panoramic tour led by a local guide, taking in grand avenues and iconic monuments, before returning to the hotel. In the evening, you can opt to attend a variety show.
Day 10 - Paris - Rouen
We start the day in central Paris with a visit to the Eiffel Tower – tickets to the second floor are included. Afterwards, we take a leisurely cruise on the Seine. The afternoon is yours to explore the city at your own pace.At around 4:00 p.m., we leave Paris for Normandy and arrive in Rouen. You’ll have free time to wander the historic centre, which dates back to Roman times and features medieval architecture and an impressive Gothic cathedral.If waiting times at the Eiffel Tower are too long, we may move the visit to another time – or to Sunday – for your convenience.
Day 11 - Rouen - English Channel - Canterbury - London
Today we spend the morning in Rouen – enjoy a relaxed stroll through the city centre – before travelling north to the coast. We cross the English Channel by ferry and arrive in Canterbury, the religious capital of England with a charming historic centre. From here we continue to London, where you have some free time around the Tower Bridge area – one of the city’s most recognisable landmarks – before we head to the hotel.
Day 12 - London
Today we explore London on a panoramic tour with a local guide, taking in key sights including Parliament, the River Thames and Buckingham Palace – and, depending on the date, you may see the Changing of the Guard. In the evening we meet in Piccadilly for a guided stroll through Leicester Square, Chinatown and Soho, areas known for their lively atmosphere, theatres and entertainment. You can choose where to dine from the many nearby restaurants before we return to the hotel.
Day 13 - London
After breakfast, we visit the British Museum – one of the world’s oldest and most renowned museums – to explore its extraordinary collections from across the globe. Around lunchtime, we provide a transfer to Camden, known for its lively, eclectic market where you can browse food stalls and shops at your own pace.The rest of the afternoon is free for you to make the most of London before our journey comes to an end. Please check your flight time and arrangements – you may need to book an additional night if your departure is late or the following day.
