Day 1 - Beijing
Welcome to China! Upon your arrival in Beijing, we will transfer you to your hotel, ensuring a seamless start to your journey. In the early evening, we'll head to Wangfujing Street, renowned for its vibrant atmosphere. This bustling pedestrian avenue is lined with a variety of shops and restaurants, offering a fantastic opportunity to immerse yourself in the lively pace of the city and get a true feel for its character. Dinner will be included in your evening's experience, after which we will return to the hotel, rounding off an exciting introduction to Beijing. Please note: This tour may have travellers joining or departing at various points along the route, meaning group composition can change during the tour. Please also be aware that depending on group composition, guiding may be in additional languages as well as English.
Day 2 - Beijing
Today promises to be an unforgettable exploration of Beijing, the bustling heart of China. Our day kicks off with a comprehensive tour of the city's premier attractions. We will first visit the Forbidden City, officially known as the Great Chinese Imperial Palace, the grandest architectural masterpiece in all of China and home to 24 emperors over nearly five centuries. This UNESCO World Heritage Site is a testament to China's rich history.Following this, we will make our way to Jingshan Park, which boasts Coal Hill, one of the city's best-preserved imperial gardens. If the weather allows, we will be treated to stunning panoramic views of the Forbidden City from the top. Our journey then leads us through Tiananmen Square, a site of great historical significance and one of the largest public squares in the world, where we can also admire the striking architecture of the Great National Theatre.Lunch will be provided as part of our exploration today. Afterwards, we will visit the Summer Palace, recognised for its exquisite gardens and tranquil lakes which served as a seasonal retreat for the Qing Dynasty. The afternoon carries us into the cultural heart of Beijing with a tricycle ride through the traditional Hutong neighbourhoods, allowing us to delve into the city's rich heritage and explore traditional craft shops. We'll step into a Siheyuan, a classic courtyard house, to appreciate the architectural charm unique to Beijing.We will then head back to the hotel for an overnight stay. Please note, due to the current visitor capacity limits at the Forbidden City, our visit is subject to availability. Should we not gain access, we will instead explore the Confucius Temple and Lama Temple, both of which are important cultural landmarks in the history of China.
Day 3 - Beijing - Shanghai
On our third day, we embark on an excursion to the Mutianyu section of the Great Wall, a remarkable feat of architecture standing for over two millennia. We will ascend and descend via cable car, allowing for easy access (tickets are included). Our time in Beijing concludes with a delightful lunch featuring the renowned Peking duck. Following this, we'll transfer to the train station and board a high-speed train bound for Shanghai. Upon arrival, we'll make our way to the hotel for check-in and an overnight stay.
Day 4 - Shanghai
Today we delve into Shanghai's vibrant mix of the traditional and the modern. We'll begin our exploration in Pudong, the city’s ultra-modern financial district, known for its towering skyscrapers such as the iconic Pearl Tower. We then take a scenic ferry across the Huangpu River, offering spectacular views that capture Shanghai's blend of old and new.Our journey continues through the historic Old City, where we'll visit the serene Yuyuan Garden, a stunning example of a private garden from the Ming Dynasty. Here, we'll also partake in a traditional tea ceremony, immersing ourselves in this fundamental aspect of Chinese culture.Afterwards, we'll explore Xintiandi, a lively neighbourhood famous for its fashionable boutiques and cosy cafés, perfect for taking in the local atmosphere. Lunch is provided for a delightful midday break. In the afternoon, we head to Tianzifang, a former residential area now renowned for its maze of alleyways filled with charming shops, artsy spaces, and quaint cafes. We'll end our day with a walk along The Bund, where majestic colonial-era buildings tell the story of Shanghai's storied past as a hub of European trade. The afternoon is yours to enjoy freely. If you're up for it, consider taking a night boat ride around Shanghai for unforgettable views of the city illuminated against the night sky.
Day 5 - Shanghai - Luoyang
On Day 5, we will embark on an early morning transfer to the train station to catch a high-speed train departing at 07:17 a.m. This journey, spanning over five hours and covering 1,000 km, will whisk us through captivating landscapes, allowing us to admire the scenic countryside as we travel from Shanghai to Luoyang. An included lunch will be provided to keep us well-fueled for a day filled with exploration.Our Luoyang adventure begins with a visit to the impressive Longmen Caves, a magnificent UNESCO World Heritage site stretching over a kilometre along the river’s rocky cliffs. This extensive complex features more than 100,000 Buddha statues and carvings, each intricately sculpted into the stone, making it a true marvel of Chinese archaeology. We’ll complement our visit with a scenic boat ride along the river, offering a unique perspective of these awe-inspiring carvings.After exploring the Longmen Caves, we’ll transfer to the heart of Luoyang. Here, we’ll pass through the ancient city walls and immerse ourselves in the captivating atmosphere of its streets. As dusk falls, the city comes alive with vibrant activities, offering plenty of opportunities to soak in its traditional charm.
Day 6 - Luoyang - Longmen - Sanmexia - Xian
In the early morning, we will venture just outside Luoyang to visit the White Horse Buddhist Monastery. This esteemed and expansive centre of Buddhist learning warmly welcomes scholars and practitioners from across the globe. Our journey continues as we make our way to Sanmenxia, a city steeped in rich history. Here, you can marvel at the imposing Yellow River and take in the sights at Baolun Temple, distinguished by its striking tall pagoda. We'll explore the celebrated Guo Museum, one of China's finest, where you can view the ancient funeral carriages of the former State of Guo – a captivating window into the region's past. Lunch is provided before we set off eastward, passing the sacred Mount Hua. Renowned as one of China's holiest mountains, its dramatic peaks hold significant spiritual meaning. By late afternoon, we'll arrive in Xian, where we conclude the day's adventures.
Day 7 - Xian
We arrive in Xian, a city steeped in history as the gateway to the ancient Silk Road. Our morning is dedicated to exploring the legendary Terracotta Army, an awe-inspiring archaeological site where an array of life-sized clay soldiers have stood sentinel over the tomb of China's first emperor for centuries. Following this, we return to the city to visit the centuries-old Small Wild Goose Pagoda, a stunning example of Buddhist architecture. Our exploration continues with a tour of Xian's historic walled city centre, where we pass through the bustling Muslim Quarter and explore the Great Mosque, an emblematic site reflecting the city's rich blend of cultural influences. We also have the opportunity to visit the Drum Tower and listen to a brief performance of traditional Chinese music, resonating with ancient instruments. The afternoon is yours to explore the city at your own pace and discover its numerous charms.
Day 8 - Xian - Chengdu
Today, we'll journey from Xian to Chengdu aboard a modern high-speed train, covering the 700-kilometre distance in just over three hours. On arrival, we will visit the renowned Panda Bear Research and Breeding Centre, home to an impressive population of 120 giant pandas and 76 red pandas. This sanctuary offers a fascinating insight into the conservation efforts that sustain these beloved species. Lunch is included. In the afternoon, we’ll enjoy a leisurely stroll through the People’s Park, a popular local gathering spot featuring a peaceful lake and traditional tea houses. You'll have the opportunity to observe locals practising tai chi while you absorb the serene atmosphere.
Day 9 - Chengdu
Today, we dedicate ourselves to exploring the serene landscapes and rich cultural sites of Sichuan Province. Our journey takes us to Dujiangyan, where we marvel at the ancient irrigation system that has been in operation for over two millennia and is recognised as a UNESCO World Heritage Site. Next, we venture to Qingcheng Shan, known as the "Mountain of the Green City," a sacred Taoist site. Wandering its forested paths reveals fascinating caves, elegant pavilions, and temples crafted from wood, some of which have stood for centuries. Here, we enjoy an included lunch amidst this beautiful setting. Our day concludes with a visit to Jiezi Ancient Town, where the winding alleys offer a glimpse into life over a thousand years ago. We then return to Chengdu to relax and reflect on the day's discoveries.
Day 10 - Chengdu - Lhasa
On the tenth day, we leave Chengdu and head to the airport for our flight to Lhasa, the capital of Tibet. Upon arrival at Gonggar Airport, our guide will be ready to greet us, and we’ll take a bus into the city, situated at an altitude of 3,700 metres. This scenic journey into Lhasa usually takes about an hour and a half. After checking into our hotel, the remainder of the evening is yours to relax and acclimatise to the high altitude. Take the opportunity to explore the bustling local bazaars at your own pace, soaking up the unique atmosphere and perhaps practising your bargaining skills with local vendors.
Day 11 - Lhasa
After breakfast, we will embark on a guided tour of Lhasa's most iconic landmark, the Potala Palace. This awe-inspiring 13-story structure, once the tallest building of its time, served as the winter residence for the Dalai Lamas. Its majestic architecture is visible from various points across the city and remains a supreme relic of Tibetan history, dating back to the 7th century. Lunch is included in today's itinerary. In the afternoon, we'll explore the Sera Monastery, established in 1419 by Sakya Yeshe, a disciple of Tsongkhapa. Here, you will witness the famous "Debate on Buddhist Scriptures," a captivating tradition unique to Sera. We will return to the hotel for an overnight stay in Lhasa, reflecting on the day's cultural and historical insights.
Day 12 - Lhasa
Today, we embark on a fascinating exploration of one of Tibet’s most cherished spiritual sites, the Jokhang Temple. Known in the Tibetan language as the 'House of Buddha', this revered temple is believed to house a statue crafted by Buddha Sakyamuni himself. It stands as a vibrant centre of Tibetan spiritual and earthly life, attracting people from various Tibetan tribes. Surrounding the temple is the bustling Barkhor Market, where you can experience the lively atmosphere as locals and visitors mingle to browse the myriad of offerings available. Lunch is included. Our afternoon is spent visiting Norbulingka, the Dalai Lama's summer palace, which offers insight into Tibetan history and culture. We’ll return to the hotel for an overnight stay, providing you with time to reflect on the rich experiences of the day.
Day 13 - Lhasa - Samye - Tsetang
Our journey today takes us along the picturesque Tsangpo River to the historic Samye Monastery—an emblem of Tibetan heritage, believed to have been the first monastery in Tibet, originally constructed between 775 and 779. While the original edifice has suffered damage over time from conflicts and natural disasters, it has been meticulously rebuilt and remains a cherished symbol of Tibetan culture. Its unique architecture fuses Tibetan, Han, and Indian styles into its impressive three-story tower. We will have lunch included before continuing to Yumbu Lakhang Palace, reputed as the first building and the palace of Tibet's initial king, offering a further glimpse into revered Tibetan history. Our enjoyable day concludes with an overnight stay in Tsetang.
Day 14 - Tsetang - Yamdrok lake - Gyantse
As we set off from Tsetang, prepare to be captivated by the stunning vistas as we ascend to the Kambala Pass at 4,790 metres. Here, you'll be treated to awe-inspiring views of Yamdrok Lake, whose turquoise waters majestically contrast against the backdrop of snow-clad peaks. En route to our next destination, a delightful lunch will be provided. As we descend, we'll journey alongside the shores of this remarkable lake, passing quaint villages that offer a glimpse into local life. Our day concludes upon arrival in Gyantse, where we'll visit the Perkhor Chode Monastery at sunset, offering a peaceful and picturesque close to a day rich in natural beauty. We'll then settle in for an overnight stay.
Day 15 - Gyantse - Shigatse
On day 15, we will set off for Shigatse, Tibet’s second-largest city and the administrative heart of the Tsang region, situated at 3,810 metres above sea level. Our visit will focus on the grand Tashilhunpo Monastery, renowned as the seat of the Panchen Lama. This extensive complex is home to an impressive statue of Maitreya, the future Buddha predicted to emerge in our world. We will include lunch during our day. As we explore the monastery, you'll encounter richly adorned reliquaries, or 'chortens,' within its various temples. Afterward, you can delve into the bustling open-air market in Shigatse, an ideal place to find authentic Tibetan handicrafts. Our day will conclude with an overnight stay in Shigatse.
Day 16 - Shigatse - Lhasa
Our journey continues as we travel by road along the picturesque Yarlung Tsangpo River, heading back to Lhasa. En route, we’ll enjoy a delicious lunch and make a stop at a quaint roadside village. Here, we'll visit a traditional incense mill and explore a Tibetan craft workshop, offering an authentic glimpse into local craftsmanship. Upon arrival in Lhasa, you'll have an overnight stay to relax and reflect on the day's experiences.
Day 17 - Lhasa
On the final day of our journey, we start the morning with breakfast before providing a transfer to the airport. Our services conclude here, leaving you with cherished memories of your adventure.
