Begin in Paris and end there 15 days later on a sweeping journey through France – with a taste of Germany and Luxembourg. You’ll explore Normandy’s coastline and Monet’s Giverny, admire Mont–Saint–Michel, and wander Brittany’s ramparts in Saint–Malo. Day 1 - Paris - Rouen - Arromanches - Caen
Early departure from Paris as we head for Normandy. Our first stop is Giverny to visit Monet’s house and its renowned gardens – admission included – and to learn about Impressionism, a movement rooted in this region. We then continue to Rouen, the Norman capital with medieval lanes and a striking cathedral, where you’ll have time to wander and find lunch. In the afternoon we travel on to Arromanches, where the beaches bear witness to the World War II landings. We end the day in Caen with free time in the central district. Note: from November to April, Monet’s house is closed, so we do not stop at Giverny.
Please note: This tour may have travellers joining or departing at various points along the route, meaning group composition can change during the tour. Please also be aware that depending on group composition, guiding may be in additional languages as well as English.
Day 2 - Caen - Mont-Saint-Michel - Saint-Malo - Dinan - Rennes
We leave Caen first thing and travel to Mont‑Saint‑Michel, known as The Marvel. You’ll have time to explore this unique island settlement, surrounded by the sea and crowned by its abbey. We then continue into Brittany for a stop in Saint‑Malo – its imposing ramparts enclose a historic centre where you’ll have time for lunch.In the afternoon we head to Dinan, a characterful Breton village where we enjoy a crepe and a drink. We then make our way to Rennes, the capital of Brittany, noted for its monumental historic centre.
Day 3 - Rennes - Angers - Tours - Villandry - Amboise
We depart Rennes for Angers, where you can choose to visit the château that houses the famed Tapestry of the Apocalypse – the largest medieval tapestry. We continue into the Loire Valley to Tours, the regional capital on the banks of the Loire, where you’ll have free time to explore the historic centre and enjoy lunch. In the afternoon we visit Château de Villandry – admission to the gardens is included – before continuing to Amboise for the night, a town celebrated for its atmospheric medieval quarter. Dinner is included.
Day 4 - Amboise - Chenonceaux - Chambord - Limoges
Morning in Amboise – we take a stroll through the town, home to the Château du Clos Lucé where Leonardo da Vinci spent his final three years. We then continue through the Loire Valley to the celebrated Château de Chenonceau – admission included – which spans the river like a bridge. Next, we visit Chambord, the largest château in the Loire Valley – access to the park included. We carry on into central France to Limoges, renowned for its porcelain, where you can explore the historic centre – Saint Etienne Cathedral is the highlight.
Day 5 - Limoges - Sarlat - Beynac-et-Cazenac - Rocamadour
We leave Limoges for the Dordogne – a region shaped by one of central France’s great historic rivers and known for its characterful villages and landscapes. Our first stop is Lascaux, where we visit the museum and the replica of the caves – entry included – to learn about the site’s remarkable prehistoric paintings. We then continue to Sarlat, whose Renaissance old town is remarkably well preserved – you will have free time to stroll and have lunch. In Beynac, we explore the medieval castle overlooking the river – admission included. We finish the day in Rocamadour, a striking medieval village with an important sanctuary set into the cliff. You may wish to walk down the Via Crucis and take the lift back up. Dinner is included.
Day 6 - Rocamadour - Padirac Cave - Collonges-la-Rouge - Saint-Emilion - Bordeaux
From Rocamadour, we head to the Padirac Chasm for an unforgettable descent and a boat ride on the underground river, 75 metres below the surface. We then continue to Collonges-la-Rouge – a striking red-stone village on the Way of St James – where there will be time for lunch. In the afternoon, we travel to Saint-Émilion, in the heart of the Bordeaux wine region, where you can enjoy a leisurely stroll. We arrive in Bordeaux in the evening. Please note: Padirac Chasm may be closed from November to the end of March due to weather conditions.
Day 7 - Bordeaux - Lourdes
This morning we explore Bordeaux, whose historic centre is a UNESCO World Heritage Site – we take in the Water Mirror and wander the old town, including its 11th century cathedral. Afterwards you have free time to stroll the Garonne river banks and choose a spot for lunch, or, if you prefer, you can visit Cité du Vin, an interactive museum dedicated to the history and production of wine. In the afternoon we continue towards the Pyrenees, arriving in Lourdes by mid afternoon – you can visit the sanctuary, and we suggest returning for the evening candlelit procession. Dinner is included.
Day 8 - Lourdes - Carcassonne - Narbona - Marseille
From Lourdes, we travel across the south of France to Carcassonne, a city encircled by remarkable medieval walls – among the finest in Europe. You’ll have time to wander and explore. After lunch, we continue to Narbonne, where you’ll enjoy free time to discover this historic Occitan city and its picturesque old town. By late afternoon we arrive in Marseille, France’s second largest city, where we recommend a stroll around the vibrant Vieux Port – lively and dotted with small restaurants.
Day 9 - Marseille - Arles - Avignon - Lyon
From Marseille we travel through Provence’s villages and landscapes. In Arles – a UNESCO World Heritage city associated with Van Gogh – we explore its Roman and medieval heritage. We continue to Les Baux to visit the small medieval village, with admission included to Carrières de Lumières, an underground art, image and sound show set in former quarries. In Avignon you’ll have time for lunch and a stroll by the vast Palais des Papes. We then continue to Lyon, where we walk through the World Heritage old town and take the cable car up to Notre Dame de Fourvière for panoramic views over the city. Note: if Carrières de Lumières is closed or tickets are unavailable, we will instead transfer to the Roman aqueduct of Pont du Gard.
Day 10 - Lyon - Tournus - Savigny Castle - Beaune - Dijon
We leave Lyon for Burgundy, stopping in Tournus to see its imposing stone gate and impressive abbey. We then continue to Beaune – the wine capital of Burgundy – where you have free time for lunch and a wander; you might visit the Wine Museum or the historic Hospices de Beaune. In the afternoon we visit Savigny Castle, a 15th century estate whose eclectic museums display motorbikes, racing cars, aeroplanes and helicopters. We continue to Dijon, the regional capital, noted for its lively streets and fine medieval and Renaissance architecture, including the Palace of the Dukes.
Day 11 - Dijon - Besancon - Colmar - Riquewihr - Strasbourg
From Dijon, we travel across Burgundy to Besançon, a city of Roman origin with a handsome historic centre and a 17th century citadel overlooking the town. We then continue into Alsace – a region long contested between France and Germany – where architecture and traditions reflect deep Germanic roots and the Alsatian dialect endures. Our first stop is Colmar, known for its canals and colourful half timbered houses, as well as its white wine and gastronomy – you’ll have time for lunch and a leisurely walk. In the afternoon we visit Riquewihr, one of Alsace’s most beautiful medieval towns, its cobbled streets and colourful houses said to have inspired scenes from Beauty and the Beast. We also visit an old winery for a tasting of local wine with a typical sweet. We arrive in Strasbourg in the evening – you can stroll around the cathedral area and Petite France, both full of character and inviting restaurants.
Day 12 - Strasbourg - Freiburg im breisgau - Triberg - Gengenbach - Baden-Baden
We begin in Strasbourg, capital of Alsace and seat of the European Parliament. Its historic centre blends medieval streets, a striking Gothic cathedral and flower‑lined canals – we include a canal cruise through Petite France to experience it from the water. We then cross into Germany, travelling through the Black Forest’s mountain landscapes. In Freiburg you’ll have time for lunch and a walk around the lively old town and cathedral area. We continue to Triberg, renowned for its cuckoo clocks, where we include admission to the Triberg Waterfalls – Germany’s highest – reached via a walking path. We pause in Gengenbach for a short photo stop before arriving in Baden–Baden for the night, a historic spa town known for its elegant architecture, parks and grand casino.
Day 13 - Baden-Baden - Speyer - Heidelberg - Frankfurt
After a short stroll through Baden-Baden’s parks, we continue into Rhineland-Palatinate and stop in Speyer on the banks of the Rhine. Its Romanesque cathedral – a UNESCO World Heritage site – awaits, and you can explore the old town where the Alte Münze tower stands out. We then travel to Heidelberg and take the funicular up to the castle – ticket included – with access to the exterior grounds, the wine cellars and the pharmacy museum, and wonderful views over the city. Afterwards, you’ll have time for lunch and to wander the old town and Marktplatz. By late afternoon we arrive in Frankfurt, a major financial hub with modern skyscrapers and an old town along the River Main – you’ll have free time to walk and dine around Römerberg before heading to the hotel.
Day 14 - Frankfurt - Luxembourg - Reims - Paris
We depart Frankfurt and travel west to the Grand Duchy of Luxembourg – a small country where both French and German (Luxembourgish dialect) are spoken. We arrive in Luxembourg City, a cosmopolitan capital that blends a rich past with its role as a financial centre and base for European institutions; the UNESCO listed old town, the city’s fortifications, the Grand Ducal Palace and Notre Dame Cathedral are among the highlights. After lunch we continue into France and the heart of the Champagne region, stopping in Reims where you can visit its splendid Gothic cathedral, historic setting for many royal coronations. We arrive in Paris by the end of the day.
Day 15 - Paris
After breakfast in Paris, we conclude the tour – no activities are scheduled today and our services end after breakfast. We hope you leave with wonderful memories of your journey.
