Itinerary
Day 1 - Ahmedabad
Arrive in Ahmedabad. On arrival at the airport, we’ll meet you for assistance and transfer to your hotel to check in. The rest of the day is free – time for you to relax. Overnight at the hotel.
Day 2 - Ahmedabad
After breakfast at the hotel, we set out on a city tour of Ahmedabad. We begin at the Hatheesing Jain Temple – established in 1850 by the merchant Seth Hatheesing and dedicated to the 15th Jain Tirthankar, Dharamnath. We then visit Bhadra Fort – noted for intricate carvings, patterned stonework and frescoes – whose gateway arches carry historical inscriptions. At Jama Mosque, we see the varied entrances and, by the eastern gate, the tomb of Sultan Ahmed Shah, which houses the graves of Ahmed Shah, his son Mohammed Shah and his grandson Qutub‑ud‑Din Ahmed Shah. We go on to the Kite Museum – the first of its kind in India and the second in the world – home to some of the rarest kites, reflecting the city’s famed Kite Festival. We continue to Sabarmati Ashram – founded in 1915 in Kochrab and moved in 1917 to the banks of the Sabarmati River to enable Gandhi’s experiments with farming, animal husbandry, cow breeding, khadi and related constructive work. We finish at the Shaking Minarets – a unique monument at Siddi Bashir’s Mosque near Sarangpur Gate. Overnight at the hotel.
Day 3 - Ahmedabad - Dholavira
Ahmedabad – Dholavira (255 km – around 5 hours). After breakfast at the hotel, we drive to Dholavira and check in to a village resort. Dholavira is one of Gujarat’s most important archaeological sites from the Indus Valley Civilisation, known for finds including seals with animal figures, funerary structures, examples of the Indus script, stone sculptures, painted pottery, terracotta ornaments, signboards and other structural remains. The ancient water reservoirs are a particular highlight, noted for their excellent preservation. Overnight at the resort.
Day 4 - Dholavira - Bhuj - Lakhpatji
Dholavira – Bhuj (220 km – around 5 hours). After breakfast, we drive to Bhuj and check in to the hotel. Later, we explore the city – starting at Aina Mahal, built in the mid-18th century under Rao Lakhpatji and carefully restored after the 2001 earthquake. We also visit neighbouring Prag Mahal, a 19th century palace with Gothic-style windows and Corinthian pillars, part of which now serves as a museum. We continue to the all-white marble Shri Swaminarayan Temple near Hamirsar Lake, first built in 1822, then visit Ramkund, a square stepwell with carvings of Vishnu’s ten incarnations and images of Rama, Sita, Lakshmana and Hanuman, located across from the Kutch Museum behind the Ram Dhun Temple. Overnight in Bhuj.
Day 5 - Bhuj - Hodka
After breakfast in Bhuj, we drive about 65 km – around 1 hour 20 minutes – into the Banni region of Kutch to Nirona village for a demonstration of Rogan art, a traditional technique whose name comes from Persian and means oil‑based. The oil is mixed with stone pigments to create different hues, and artisans use a six–inch metal stick to draw a fine thread of Rogan across cloth with remarkable precision. We also meet Luhar craftspeople who have preserved copper work for over seven generations, with pieces such as heart–shaped wind chimes, a xylophone made of bells and fauna–inspired bell designs, and we observe lacquer work on wooden utensils. We then continue to Hodka, check in at the resort and have lunch. In the evening we take a short drive to enjoy views of the White Rann.
Day 6 -
Hodka – White Rann of Kutch We set out very early for the White Rann of Kutch to watch the sunrise across this vast salt marsh in the Thar Desert, which spans about 7,500 km² and is considered one of the largest salt deserts in the world. We then visit Dhordo village, home to the White Rann and the Mutwa Muslim community, before returning to Hodka for breakfast.Later, we visit a small Pathan community hamlet known for its embroidery, then continue to Khavda to meet local potters and the Samma tribe. In the late afternoon we drive to Kala Dungar to take in the sunset. Dinner and overnight in Hodka.
Day 7 - Mandvi - Bhuj
After breakfast, we drive from Hodka to Mandvi – around 135 km and 3 hours – stopping in Sumarasar village to observe traditional shawl and stole weaving, a craft typically passed from father to son. We then continue to Bhuj to meet the Abu Baker Wazirs at the Museum of Quality Textiles – an institution of over 50 years – run by collectors of antique Indian textiles and embroideries for more than 45 years. On arrival in Mandvi, we check in at the beach resort. Later we visit Vijay Vilas Palace, built in 1929 by Rao Vijayrajji in red sandstone with Rajput features – a central dome, Bengal domes, corner bastions and coloured glass windows – and often used as a Bollywood filming location. The top balcony offers wide views of the area, and the king’s tomb can also be seen. We then explore Mandvi’s shipbuilding yards, where local carpenters still shape ocean going dhows by hand, with vessels ranging from about 250 to 1,000 tons. You may wish to purchase a handmade model from local artisans, and you can spend your remaining time relaxing on the beach. We have dinner and stay overnight at the beach resort.
Day 8 - Mandvi - Mundra - Bhadreshwar - Bhuj
Mandvi – Mundra – Bhadreshwar – Bhuj (approx. 135 km/3 hours). After breakfast, we drive towards Bhuj, stopping first in Mundra to see some of the finest Batik workshops. Here we observe the process from de-starching the white fabric by soaking it in soda and rinsing, to preparing a long sand-topped worktable and block-printing the cloth with wax. We continue to Bhadreshwar Jain Temple, where it is claimed the city was founded in 516 BC and that the first temple was built around 2,500 years ago – about 45 years after the death of Lord Mahavir. The main temple is in white marble with impressive pillars, surrounded by 52 smaller shrines – one reputedly housing the original Parshavanath idol from 500 BC. We then continue to Bhuj for drop-off at the airport to board your evening flight onward.
