Chennai Heritage & Coastal Trail

After pick-up from your hotel of choice or the airport in Chennai, we set out for Pondicherry – a journey of about 230 km and around five hours. We stop several times en route. In Kanchipuram, the City of Thousand Temples, we visit Kailasanathar Temple, renowned for its architecture; Ekambareswarar Temple – one of the Pancha Bhoota Stalams representing the element of Earth; Varadharaja Perumal Temple; Vaikundhaperumal Temple; and Kamakshiamman Temple.

We continue to Gingee Fort, a vast hilltop citadel spread across three rocky outcrops. Here we explore Kalyan Mahal, Chenjiamman Temple, Anaikulam Pond, the ancient granaries and Kamalakkani Temple, ascend the watchtowers for panoramic views, and visit Ranganathar Temple.

On arrival in Pondicherry, you may unwind with a leisurely stroll along the seaside promenade, taking in the coastal atmosphere. Overnight in Pondicherry.

Today we travel from Pondicherry to Chennai via Mahabalipuram – about 160 km and roughly 3 hours by road. This morning, we begin at Sri Aurobindo Ashram, founded in 1926 by Sri Aurobindo and The Mother, to learn about their teachings in its calm surroundings. We then explore the French Quarter – also known as White Town – noting its blend of French and Tamil architecture as we wander past colourful colonial façades, cafés and boutiques. We continue to Promenade Beach for a relaxed seafront walk with views of the Bay of Bengal, then visit the Basilica of the Sacred Heart of Jesus, a neo–Gothic church known for its stained glass. We round off Pondicherry with the Pondicherry Museum, home to artefacts that trace the region’s history.

In the afternoon, we drive north to Mahabalipuram to see the Shore Temple – dedicated to Lord Shiva and set beside the sea – with the chance for sunset views, followed by Arjuna’s Penance, a vast rock relief and UNESCO World Heritage Site. We then continue to Chennai, where your guide will drop you at your hotel or at Chennai airport, bringing your journey to a close.
