In Kanchipuram you’ll explore grand Dravidian temples dedicated to Shiva and Vishnu – think Kailasanathar, Ekambareswarar and Varadharaja – before continuing to Pondicherry’s French Quarter, the breezy Promenade and Auroville’s striking Matrimandir. Day 1 - Chennai - Kanchipuram - Pondicherry
7:30 am departure from Chennai for Pondicherry via Kanchipuram – a 200 km drive. En route, we explore Kanchipuram’s celebrated temples, beginning with Kailasanathar Temple, an early masterpiece dedicated to Lord Shiva known for its detailed stonework and calm setting. We continue to Ekambareswarar Temple to see its soaring gopurams and the sacred mango tree believed to be over 3,500 years old. We then visit Varadharaja Temple, a major Vishnu shrine with finely carved pillars, followed by Vaikundhaperumal Temple. Our Kanchipuram tour concludes at Kamakshiamman Temple.We continue to Pondicherry and, on arrival, check in to your hotel. We visit Auroville – an experimental community founded by the spiritual leader Mirra Alfassa – and see the Matrimandir, a striking spherical structure clad in golden discs, set amid tranquil gardens. We then call at the Pondicherry Museum to view its collection of bronzes, temple lamps, handicrafts and art that reflect the region’s heritage.Later, we wander through the French Quarter, taking in its colonial villas, streets painted in mustard tones and lively Tamil neighbourhoods. We pass landmarks including White Town, the French War Memorial and the seaside Promenade on Goubert Avenue with views of the Bay of Bengal. You may also choose to visit the Manakula Vinayagar Temple, dedicated to Lord Ganesha. Overnight in Pondicherry.
Day 2 - Pondicherry - Mahabalipuram - Chennai
After breakfast in Pondicherry, we drive to Mahabalipuram – about 160 km and around 2 hours – to explore its celebrated stone monuments. We begin at the Five Rathas, remarkable monoliths that chart the evolution of Dravidian temple design, then continue to the 7th century cave temples with panels carved in the Mamalla style. We pause at Krishna’s Butterball, a vast granite boulder seemingly defying gravity, before visiting the Shore Temple, built from granite blocks in the 7th century under King Narasimhavarman II Rajasimha, noted for its elegant carvings and coastal setting. We also take in Arjuna’s Penance, one of the world’s largest rock cut reliefs, illustrating scenes from the Mahabharata alongside everyday life. If you wish, you can visit the Tiger Cave, a small rock cut temple complex set amid greenery and known for its serene surroundings. Later, we continue to Chennai for a drop off at your hotel or the airport.
