Itinerary
Day 1 - Arrival in Male & Exploring Villimale
Male - Hulhumale - Villimale - Hulhumale. Upon arrival at Velana International Airport, you’ll be met by our Maldivian guide and transferred to your guest house in Hulhumale. After we have checked in, we travel across Male to the quieter island of Villimale, where we wander peaceful streets lined with pastel-toned homes and observe daily island life.
With our guide, we wander through pastel-coloured streets, passing vibrant local houses as we gain insight into how development is impacting nearby coral reefs. We also meet the dedicated team at Save the Beach, a local NGO safeguarding the Maldives’ marine ecosystems through reef monitoring, beach cleans, and community-led education.
Please note: Please ensure that you arrive before midday on day 1 at Velana International Airport. The Maldives is a Muslim country, so alcohol is unavailable on local islands. Bikinis are not permitted on local beaches but can be worn in private guesthouse areas such as gardens, balconies, or designated tourist beaches. We strongly recommend you bring your own mask and snorkel on this tour, both for hygiene reasons and to ensure a proper fit.
Day 2 - Male City Tour & Transfer to Goidhoo
Hulhumale - Male - Goidhoo. After breakfast, we explore Male on foot with our guide, uncovering the stories of Hukuru Miskiy, The Friday Mosque, pausing at historical landmarks, and soaking in the vibrant atmosphere of the local markets filled with spices, produce, and island chatter.
After time for lunch, we board a speedboat for the two-hour journey to Goidhoo, a culturally rich island known for its ancient mosques, freshwater lakes—rare in the Maldives—mangroves, and thriving fruit and vegetable farms.
By late afternoon, we stop at a local café to sample hedhikaa, the Maldivian take on afternoon tea between 3-5 PM, with a selection of bite-sized sweet and savoury snacks served with black tea. As the sun begins to set, we head to the beach for a refreshing swim.
Day 3 - Goidhoo Snorkelling & History
Today, we begin with a guided snorkelling adventure, immersing ourselves in the Maldives’ breathtaking marine life. Our guide will give a safety briefing on responsible snorkelling and remain nearby as a ‘spotter’, pointing out vibrant tropical fish and hidden coral creatures. Those less confident will receive extra support to ensure comfort and safety as we explore the colourful underwater world.
In the afternoon, we explore the island of Goidhoo, uncovering its rich history. We hear the story of a 19th-century African woman, once a slave bought by the king during his pilgrimage to Mecca, who was freed and settled here with a house and well built for her. This tradition of freeing slaves before an owner’s death was common among Maldivian nobility, and some local families still trace their lineage back to this remarkable ancestor.
Day 4 - Mangrove Kayaking & Fehendhoo Island Exploration
Goidhoo - Fehendhoo. This morning, we set out to kayak across one of the island’s serene mangrove lakes. Our guide will teach us how to paddle and steer the kayak before we begin exploring this unique ecosystem. As we glide through the waterways, we’ll learn about the vital role mangroves play in the Maldives, balancing marine life and supporting local communities. The guide will share insights into the importance of preserving these delicate habitats and how we each contribute to protecting the islands’ natural heritage.
In the late afternoon, we take a speedboat to Fehendhoo, one of the least inhabited islands in the Baa Atoll. Upon arrival, we explore the island alongside our guide, hearing the remarkable story of Frenchman François Pyrard. Shipwrecked here in 1602, Pyrard’s efforts to learn the local language earned him favour with the island’s chief, who took him to the capital. Pyrard’s detailed accounts offer a rare glimpse into Maldivian life from the 14th to 19th centuries. The remains of his ship, the Corbin, still lie on the reef, its hidden treasures yet to be discovered—perhaps luck will be on our side.
Day 5 - Guided Snorkelling & Forest Walk on Fulhadhoo
Fehendhoo - Fulhuadhoo. After breakfast, we embark on a guided snorkelling adventure amid the crystal-clear waters surrounding Fehendhoo. The vibrant coral reefs here teem with colourful fish and diverse marine life, including turtles, sharks, and rays. Each snorkel promises a unique glimpse into the rich underwater world that defines the Maldives’ oceanic charm.
In the late afternoon, we transfer by speedboat to Fulhadhoo, one of the most stunning islands in the Baa Atoll. After settling into our local accommodation, we take a leisurely tropical forest walk, winding our way to the beach to watch the sunset over one of the world’s top 25 beaches. As dusk falls, a torch will come in handy to navigate the path back under the starlit sky.
Day 6 - Women’s Development Committee Visit & Sandbank Adventure
Today, we meet the inspiring women of the local Women’s Development Committee (WDC), who play a vital role in empowering the community through networking and collaborative initiatives. Under their guidance, we learn to prepare a traditional Maldivian breakfast, including mashuni—a blend of tuna, onion, coconut, and chilli—and roshi flatbread.
After, we set off on a scenic journey through Goidhoo Atoll, dotted with stunning sandbanks waiting to be explored. Our destination is a secluded Island like Robinson Crusoe Island, where we can wander its pristine beaches and discover hidden corners in solitude. As the sun dips below the horizon, painting the sky with golden and orange hues, we will enjoy a traditional fish and coconut BBQ, surrounded by the tranquil beauty of this untouched paradise.
Day 7 - Coral Nursery & Beach Clean
This morning, we visit Fulhadhoo’s coral nursery to learn about the vital work being done to restore the Maldives’ fragile reefs. You’ll gain insight into coral propagation techniques, including fragment collection, nurturing, and monitoring the growth of new colonies, witnessing the delicate process firsthand.
In the afternoon, we join a community island clean, an important act of environmental stewardship and responsible tourism. After contributing to preserving this beautiful place, we’ll refresh ourselves with a swim in the ocean. The day concludes with a cultural dinner featuring traditional Maldivian dishes beneath the stars.
Day 8 - Fulhadhoo to Male
Fulhuadhoo - Male. After your final breakfast, a speedboat will collect you at 10 AM for transfer back to Male where you will be escorted to Velana International Airport for your departure. This will mark the end of the tour. Safe travels!
