Day 1 - Mexico City
On arrival in Mexico City, we arrange your transfer to the hotel. The rest of the day is free for you to relax after your flight or take a short stroll nearby at your own pace. Our guide will contact you in the late afternoon – please keep your phone on or check with reception – to welcome you and confirm the plan for tomorrow.
Please note: This tour may have travellers joining or departing at various points along the route, meaning group composition can change during the tour. Please also be aware that depending on group composition, guiding may be in additional languages as well as English.
Day 2 - Mexico City
A full day to discover Mexico City. In the morning we head to the neighbourhood of Xochimilco to glide along its canals on a colourful, flower–decked trajinera, passing the area’s semi–floating gardens. Afterwards we take a panoramic tour of the city, taking in the Plaza of the Three Cultures, the historic centre with the Zócalo, Metropolitan Cathedral and the Aztec Templo Mayor, Chapultepec Park, Paseo de la Reforma and the city’s main avenues. You’ll then have free time for lunch around the Zócalo.In the afternoon we visit the Basilica of Guadalupe – the most visited Catholic shrine in the Americas – to see both the old 18th–century basilica and the modern temple. In the evening we head to Plaza Garibaldi, known for its lively cantinas, restaurants and bars where mariachi bands perform. Dinner is included at a typical Mexican restaurant.
Day 3 - Mexico City - Mine two star - Tlalpujahua - Patzcuaro
We leave Mexico City for the forested highlands where the monarch butterflies spend the winter. We visit La Mina de las Dos Estrellas – a former mine turned museum that showcases the region’s mining heritage. We then explore Tlalpujahua, a Pueblo Mágico in Michoacán known for its magnificent Baroque sanctuary and handcrafted Christmas ornaments. You’ll have free time to stroll the cobbled streets and choose a place for lunch – you’ll notice Santa Claus figures in many of its shops. We continue to Pátzcuaro for a panoramic tour of this colonial city with deep pre–Hispanic roots, distinctive architecture and lively craft markets.
Day 4 - Patzcuaro - Morelia - Tlaquepaque - Guadalajara
From Pátzcuaro we depart for Morelia, capital of Michoacán – a UNESCO World Heritage city famed for its pink-stone architecture. On arrival, you can explore the historic centre at your own pace – the Cathedral, Plaza de Armas and the University of Morelia, founded in 1540, are key sights – and take time for lunch.We then stop in Tlaquepaque, a Pueblo Mágico known for mariachi, live performances, artisan shops and excellent local cuisine.We continue to Guadalajara, capital of Jalisco – a vibrant colonial city celebrated as the birthplace of mariachi and tequila – arriving in the late afternoon.
Day 5 - Guadalajara
This morning we explore Guadalajara – a modern metropolis with a colonial historic centre. We tour the historic core, including the Cathedral, the market and Plaza Tapatía, and visit Hospicio Cabañas, a UNESCO World Heritage Site. Afterwards, we continue to the town of Tequila for an included visit to the Mundo Cuervo distillery to see how this famous Mexican drink is made – tasting included. You’ll then have free time to stroll and find lunch in picturesque Tequila before we return to Guadalajara.
Day 6 - Guadalajara - Guanajuato
We leave Guadalajara this morning and travel into the state of Guanajuato, arriving at midday. In the afternoon we explore Guanajuato on a guided city tour – a UNESCO World Heritage university city – taking in its steep slopes, narrow lanes and historic churches. We also ride the cable car up to El Pípila for panoramic views across the city.
Day 7 - Guanajuato - Dolores Hidalgo - San Miguel de Allende - Queretaro
Leaving Guanajuato, we travel through the mountains to Dolores Hidalgo – the birthplace of Mexican independence. We continue to the Sanctuary of Atotonilco – known as the Sanctuary of God and Country and recognised as a World Heritage Site – noting that access to the interior may not be possible if a retreat is in progress. We then explore San Miguel de Allende, a World Heritage city with elegant colonial architecture and cobbled streets; you have time to stroll at your own pace. Later, we arrive in Querétaro, admired for its historic centre, Plaza de Armas and lively pedestrian streets.
Day 8 - Queretaro - Tula - Puebla
We depart Queretaro for Tula for an included visit to the archaeological site – the ancient Toltec capital. We’ll see the Atlantes, striking warrior statues about four metres tall, along with the site’s pyramids, palaces and carved columns that reflect this civilisation’s sophistication. We then continue to Puebla for a panoramic tour of its historic centre, renowned for culinary traditions, colonial architecture and Talavera pottery. Highlights include its Renaissance-style cathedral and lively Zócalo. Overnight in Puebla.
Day 9 - Puebla - Oaxaca
Leaving Puebla, we travel through the mountains towards the state of Oaxaca, enjoying the scenery en route. We arrive in Oaxaca by late morning and begin our included visit of this UNESCO World Heritage city, known for its remarkable historic centre. In the afternoon we continue up to Monte Albán – set on a mountaintop about 400 metres above the Oaxaca Valley – for an included guided tour with entrance. This ancient site is the most magnificent of the Zapotec cities. We return to Oaxaca afterwards, where you’ll have free time to keep exploring at your own pace.
Day 10 - Oaxaca - San Pablo Villa de Mitla - Tuxtla Gutiérrez
We depart Oaxaca early, making a brief stop in San Pablo Villa de Mitla – a Pueblo Mágico – where you’ll have time for a short stroll around the 16th–century Church of San Pablo and along its rustic streets. We then continue through the mountains of Oaxaca toward the isthmus, with lunch included en route. By late afternoon we arrive in Tuxtla Gutiérrez, the capital of Chiapas.
Day 11 - Tuxtla Gutiérrez - Sumidero Canyon - Chiapa de Corzo - Zinacantán - San Juan Chamula - San Cristobal de las Casas
We travel to the Cañón del Sumidero and board a boat to cruise this striking gorge – its cliffs rise close to 1 km over a 14 km stretch. Back on land, we stroll through Chiapa de Corzo, a colonial town known for its traditions. We then delve further into Maya culture with visits to Tzotzil communities: in Zinacantán we see the distinctive women’s dress and weaving workshops, and in San Juan Chamula we observe a church where Catholicism blends with pre Hispanic rites. We continue to San Cristóbal de las Casas – you have the afternoon free to explore this beautiful colonial city, founded in 1528.
Day 12 - San Cristobal de las Casas
We set out from San Cristóbal de las Casas for an eight-hour excursion with a local operator. Our first stop is Las Grutas del Mamut – a vast cave named for a rock formation that resembles a mammoth – where we admire striking natural formations. We then continue to El Arcotete Ecotourism Park, a scenic area of varied vegetation and abundant wildlife. Here, a dramatic stone arch carved over thousands of years by the Fogótico River links to caves with caverns, rock formations and stalactites to explore. Our final visit is Rancho Nuevo Ecotourism Park, home to a cave that stretches 10.2 kilometres and reaches depths of up to 550 metres. An illuminated pathway leads 750 metres into the cavern, set within a conifer forest where you can also choose to go horse riding, camping, hiking or caving.We return to San Cristóbal de las Casas, where you have free time for the rest of the day.
Day 13 - San Cristobal de las Casas
We set out on a five-hour excursion with a local tour operator to Moxviquil, a learning community focused on sustainability. Here we explore native birdlife, observe pollinators and insects, visit the beautiful orchid garden, and follow the signature interpretive hiking trail – a hands-on way to connect with the surrounding nature.We then visit the Museum of Maya Medicine, dedicated to sharing and preserving Tsotsil–Tseltal healing practices in Chiapas. The displays present traditional methods and the roles of community healers, including the Jilol (pulse reader), Koponej witz (mountain prayer specialist), Tzakbak (bone setter), Jvetome (midwife) and Acvomol (herbalist). We return to the hotel, and the rest of the afternoon is free for you to spend as you wish.
Day 14 - San Cristobal de las Casas - Tuxtla Gutiérrez
According to your flight schedule, we include a transfer from San Cristóbal de las Casas to Tuxtla Gutiérrez airport. You then take your chosen flight – not included – to Mexico City or onward to another destination. This marks the end of your journey.
