Catalonia Highlights Self-Drive

Arrive at Barcelona airport and collect your car before setting out to explore this vibrant city. Begin with a visit to Park Güell, located in the northwestern suburbs, where Gaudí’s vision of an ideal ‘garden city’ is evident in the colourful mosaics crafted from broken tiles. Although unfinished, the park offers captivating views over Barcelona and the Mediterranean. Next, visit the iconic Sagrada Familia basilica, still under construction but renowned for its imaginative design. Take time to admire its three striking façades, including the surreal Nativity façade, largely completed before Gaudí’s death, and note the recently finished nave roof. Spend the night in the Barcelona area.

After breakfast, we drive to Lloret de Mar, a vibrant Mediterranean beach town located just 75 kilometres from Barcelona. Along the way, you can enjoy views of the sparkling blue sea. In Lloret, we visit the church of Sant Roma, notable for its blend of Gothic and Baroque styles, and explore the Puig de Castellet Iberian ruins, offering insight into the region’s ancient past. In the evening, you have the option to experience the town’s lively nightlife. Overnight in Lloret de Mar.

After breakfast, we set out to explore some of the charming villages along the Costa Brava, known for its dramatic cliffs, golden sandy beaches and classic Mediterranean scenery. Our first stop is Palamós, where you can wander the streets and take in the captivating coastal views. We then continue to Palafrugell, a village shaped by its cork industry heritage. Here, the original street layout and whitewashed houses remain intact, while the harbour is dotted with brightly coloured traditional boats, contrasting beautifully with the sandy beach. Our final visit is to Begur, a village nestled beneath a rugged hilltop castle. From the castle’s summit, you can enjoy sweeping views of the deep blue Mediterranean Sea. We return to Lloret de Mar for the night.

After breakfast, we travel back to the vibrant city of Barcelona. You can explore the historic Gothic Quarter at your own pace, wandering its narrow cobbled streets and discovering charming plazas lined with café terraces and hidden churches. Take time to admire Santa Eulalia Cathedral, along with the churches of Santa Maria del Mar and Santa Maria del Pi—three fine examples of Catalan Gothic architecture. Don’t miss the medieval splendour of the former royal palace at Plaça del Rei. We stay overnight in Barcelona.

After breakfast, prepare to return your rental car at the designated location. You will then make your way to the airport to catch your departure flight home, concluding your time in Barcelona.
