Begin in Madrid and finish in Lisbon on a 12–day adventure across Spain and Portugal. You’ll explore Madrid’s stately boulevards, lively plazas and the Santiago Bernabéu, then dip into Andalusia – think Granada’s Moorish charm, the Costa Tropical and Nerja cliffs, Málaga’s old town, dramatic Ronda and Seville’s river cruise with optional flamenco. Pause at Roman Mérida before crossing to Portugal for characterful Évora and Alentejo hill towns. Day 1 - Madrid
Welcome to Madrid. On arrival at the airport, we’ll transfer you to your hotel. You’ll have free time until the tour begins – please check the information signs at hotel reception for details of the welcome meeting with your guide and fellow travellers. In the evening, we’ll transfer you to Plaza Mayor and La Latina, Madrid’s best known areas for nightlife and tapas restaurants. You can choose where to dine, with plenty of options including Spanish, Indian, Chinese and Middle Eastern cuisine.
Please note: This tour may have travellers joining or departing at various points along the route, meaning group composition can change during the tour. Please also be aware that depending on group composition, guiding may be in additional languages as well as English.
Day 2 - Madrid
This morning, we set out on a comprehensive tour of central Madrid, taking in the Paseo del Prado, the Cibeles and Neptuno fountains, the Puerta de Alcalá, Plaza de Colón and Plaza Mayor. We then continue to Retiro Park to see the lake and the Palacio de Cristal. Admission to the Santiago Bernabéu Stadium – home of Real Madrid – is included.Afterwards, you have the afternoon at leisure to explore at your own pace. In the evening, we provide a return transfer to the hotel.
Day 3 - Madrid - Granada
We leave Madrid early and head south across La Mancha, pausing in Puerto Lápice – a classic Manchego village linked to Don Quixote. Continuing through the Despeñaperros pass into Andalusia, we arrive in Granada, where lunch is included. The afternoon is yours – you could visit the Cathedral, which houses the tomb of the Catholic Monarchs, or wander the Albaicín neighbourhood and enjoy the views of the Alhambra from the Mirador de San Nicolás. Note – admission to the Alhambra is not included; if you wish to visit, we recommend purchasing tickets in advance via the official website https://tickets.alhambra-patronato.es or through local tour companies.
Day 4 - Granada - Nerja - Malaga - Ronda - Seville
Leaving Granada, we travel through the foothills of the Sierra Nevada, then follow the Mediterranean along the Tropical Coast – known for its mild microclimate and crops such as guava, mango and avocado, and historically sugar cane. We stop in Nerja to take in its seaside setting and cliffs. We continue to Málaga, capital of the Costa del Sol, where you’ll have time for lunch and to wander the historic centre. In the afternoon we head inland into the Andalusian sierras to reach Ronda, a classic white town famed for the dramatic gorge that divides it in two. We then continue to Seville, arriving in the late afternoon – dinner is included at the hotel.
Day 5 - Seville
This morning we explore Seville on a guided tour – taking in the Cathedral and its Giralda bell tower, the banks of the Guadalquivir, and the atmospheric districts of Santa Cruz and Triana. After the tour, we include a leisurely boat cruise on the Guadalquivir for panoramic views of the city. In the evening, you can choose to attend a flamenco tablao performance.
Day 6 - Seville - Merida - Evora
We depart Seville, travelling through gentle uplands and open pasture towards Extremadura. In Mérida, we include entry to the Archaeological Ensemble – notably the Roman theatre and amphitheatre – a UNESCO World Heritage Site renowned for its excellent preservation. You’ll have time for lunch and to explore the pedestrian historic centre, where restaurants and cafés line the streets.We then continue into Portugal and arrive in Évora, another UNESCO-listed city known for its whitewashed streets, Renaissance palaces and cathedral. You’ll have free time to discover the old town at your own pace.
Day 7 - Evora - Marvão - Castelo de Vide - Tomar - Fatima
Leaving Évora, we travel through the Alentejo’s rolling landscapes, stopping first in Marvão, a picturesque walled town with far‑reaching views across the region. We continue to Castelo de Vide to see its castle and spend time in the old Jewish quarter — you can visit the medieval synagogue, now a small museum, or simply wander the winding lanes. After a lunch break, we head to Tomar to visit the Convent of Christ — admission included. Before reaching Fátima, we pause in Aljustrel, birthplace of the three young shepherds associated with the apparitions, where we have the chance to see Lúcia’s house. On arrival in Fátima, you’ll have free time at the Sanctuary — you can join the candlelight procession if you wish, when it does not run in winter. Dinner is included.
Day 8 - Fatima - Porto
We travel north from Fátima to Porto, Portugal’s second-largest city, arriving in the late morning – around 11:00. On arrival, we board a traditional Portuguese “Rabelo” boat for a 50 minutes cruise along the Douro, offering a different perspective on the city’s riverside. Afterwards, you have free time to explore the lively Ribeira district at your own pace, with its narrow lanes, historic merchant houses and cafés, before we continue to the hotel.
Day 9 - Porto - Braga - Bom Jesus - Guimarães - Aveiro - Coimbra
We leave Porto for the green landscapes of northern Portugal. In Braga, we stroll through the historic centre – known as the country’s religious capital – and ride the world’s oldest funicular up to the Sanctuary of Bom Jesus for wide-ranging views. If you wish, you can walk back down to take in the baroque stairway.We then continue to Guimarães, Portugal’s first capital, where the Palace of the Dukes reflects its historic importance. You’ll have free time for lunch in the old town. In the afternoon we head west to the Atlantic and Aveiro – the “Venice of Portugal” – renowned for its canals and colourful houses. Here we include a cruise on a traditional moliceiro boat to explore the waterways and salt flats, with a tasting of a typical local sweet on board. We arrive in Coimbra in the late afternoon, with dinner included at the hotel.
Day 10 - Coimbra - Batalha - Nazare - Obidos - Lisbon
We spend the morning in Coimbra – Portugal’s third largest city – noted for its historic university and steep streets. Continuing south, we visit the Monastery of Batalha with entrance included, an impressive medieval royal mausoleum. We then reach Nazaré, a traditional fishing town and seaside resort, where you have time for lunch and a stroll. We ride the elevator up to the old town – tickets included – for sweeping ocean views. On the way to Lisbon we stop in Óbidos, one of Portugal’s prettiest towns, where you can wander its white streets adorned with flowers. We arrive in Lisbon at approximately 07:30 p.m.
Day 11 - Lisbon
This morning we take a sightseeing tour of Lisbon, the city of seven hills, exploring its characterful lanes and iconic tiles, and we visit the Belém neighbourhood – the departure point for 15th–century Portuguese ocean voyages. The afternoon is yours – you can stroll through Bairro Alto and its viewpoint, or join an optional trip to Sintra, Cascais and Estoril. In the evening, we provide a transfer back to the hotel from lively Restauradores Square, known for its bars and cafés.
Day 12 - Lisbon
After breakfast in Lisbon, we conclude our journey – we hope you leave with lasting memories of this trip.
