Itinerary
Day 1 - Paro
Touch down at Paro International Airport, hemmed by soaring Himalayan ridges, and begin with one of the world’s most dramatic landings. We transfer to our hotel in the Paro Valley, where you settle in and sample Bhutanese warmth. This afternoon we visit Ta Dzong – a seventeenth–century watchtower turned National Museum – to view artefacts, thangkas and exhibits that chart the kingdom’s story. We then stroll down to Paro Dzong, the great fortress–monastery on the valley floor, exploring cloisters and courtyards that show how faith and governance intertwine. We also stop at Nado Poizokhang Incense Factory to learn the time–honoured craft, watching juniper, sandalwood and herbs blended and hand rolled for temples across the country.
Day 2 - Paro - Punakha
We drive from Paro to Punakha over the scenic Dochu La, as wooded hills give way to far–reaching mountain vistas. We pause at the pass – its 108 chortens honouring Bhutanese soldiers – to absorb the Himalayan panorama and tranquil mood. We then hike through terraces and village paths to Chimi Lhakhang, the temple of the ‘Divine Madman’, learning about its fertility blessings and the playful legends that make this pilgrimage so distinctive.
Day 3 - Punakha - Phobjikha - Gangtey
We follow a riverside trail along the Mo Chhu to Khamsum Yuelley Namgyel Chorten, climbing to the hilltop shrine for fine views and glimpses of rural life. We explore Punakha Dzong – the splendid fortress at the confluence of the Pho Chhu and Mo Chhu – admiring carved timberwork, inner temples and river scenes. From Punakha we drive into the broad glacial bowl of the Phobjikha Valley, passing hamlets and forested slopes en route to remote Gangtey. On arrival we settle into a traditional homestay in Gangtey Village, meet our hosts and share home cooked meals – an authentic window onto everyday life in this high valley.
Day 4 - Phobjikha Valley - Gangtey
We take a gentle nature walk through the Phobjikha Valley, where black–necked cranes gather in season, crossing meadows, farmsteads and clear streams in one of Bhutan’s loveliest landscapes. We visit Gangtey Monastery, a 17th–century gompa overlooking the valley, exploring temples, murals and courtyards while learning about the spiritual rhythm of monastic life. We round off the day with time spent with a Gangtey host family to see how traditional farming households live – gaining insight into local customs, seasonal work and daily routines in this remote highland community.
Day 5 - Thimphu - Wangdue Phodrang
Today we make the journey from the Phobjikha Valley over Dochu La once more – bound for Thimphu – pausing to relish forested ridges, deep valleys and distant peaks. En route we stop at Rinchengang, renowned for traditional stone masonry, and wander its tightly clustered houses perched on a hillock overlooking Wangdue Phodrang Dzong. From across the valley we admire the dzong’s commanding stance and dramatic setting, reflecting on its historic defensive and administrative roles.
Day 6 - Thimphu
We begin at the Memorial Chorten, the whitewashed stupa honouring Bhutan’s third king, joining locals as we spin prayer wheels and circle the shrine clockwise. We explore the Folk Heritage Museum, stepping into a traditional farmhouse where exhibits and recreated rooms bring rural life vividly to light. At the National Institute for Zorig Chusum we watch students train in the thirteen traditional arts – perhaps painting, woodcarving or weaving among them. We also visit a local workshop to observe craftspeople creating thangkas, textiles or basketry, seeing how time–tested techniques are being safeguarded. We continue to the Takin Research Centre to learn about the country’s unusual national animal and conservation efforts. We visit Thangthong Dewachen Dupthop Nunnery for a glimpse of monastic life and serene views over the Thimphu Valley, then round off with a stroll through the weekend market to browse snacks, textiles and souvenirs alongside residents. If time allows, you can also visit the national stadium to watch an archery match – the national sport and a lively feature of festivals and celebrations.
Day 7 - Paro
We hike through fragrant pine forest on a steep mountain path to Taktsang Monastery – the famed Tiger’s Nest – pausing to absorb its dramatic cliffside perch and sweeping views over the Paro Valley. We explore the evocative ruins of Drukgyel Dzong, once guarding the valley’s approaches, and continue to Kyichu Lhakhang, among the oldest temples in Bhutan, to admire ancient statues, murals and butter lamps in a deeply atmospheric shrine. After the hike we unwind in a traditional hot stone bath – river stones heating the water to soothe tired muscles – before a farewell dinner at a local farmhouse near Paro, tasting classic Bhutanese dishes and sharing a final evening with our hosts and fellow guests.
Day 8 - Paro
You have free time in Paro for last–minute shopping or quiet reflection, exploring the town at your own pace before departure. We provide your transfer from your Paro hotel to the airport – check in for your international flight at Paro International Airport and bid farewell to the valley and the mountains that have framed your journey. Your Bhutan tour concludes as you depart – the tour ends in Paro after your airport transfer. Extensions to Kathmandu, Delhi or Bangkok can be arranged if required.
