Why visit Finland
Finland is a destination of contrasts, combining contemporary city life with wide-open nature. In Helsinki, Finland tours highlight striking architecture and harborfront scenes, with time to explore markets and cultural sights. A visit can also take in Suomenlinna Sea Fortress, best seen from the water. Beyond the capital, Finland rewards travelers who enjoy calm landscapes and small-city character, with places such as Turku, Tampere and Lappeenranta offering history, lakeside views and a slower pace. Farther north, Finnish Lapland brings deep forests and snow-covered trails, ideal for winter activities and evenings spent searching the night sky for the Northern Lights. From festive experiences at Santa Claus Village to time in a sauna after a day outdoors, Finland tours suit travelers looking for scenery, culture, and seasonal experiences in one journey.

How long in Finland?
When is the best time to visit Finland?
Winter is the headline season, when Lapland lies under deep snow and the northern lights, husky rides and glass igloo stays are at their best, with Christmas and New Year the busiest weeks. Summer brings the midnight sun and long, mild days for exploring Helsinki, Turku and Tampere. Spring and autumn are quieter, with September's autumn colors and returning auroras a highlight.
Temperature ranges are average daily lows and highs for Rovaniemi in Lapland. Helsinki and the south run noticeably milder, especially in winter.
Before you go
A few practical tips to help you travel smart and make the most of your time in Finland.
Euro (EUR)
Finnish
Helsinki
Type C / F
Two round pins, 230VMoney
Finland uses the Euro. Cards and contactless are accepted almost everywhere, from city cafes to wilderness lodges, so you will rarely need cash. Tipping is not expected, though rounding up for good service is appreciated.
What to pack
For Lapland in winter, bring thermal base layers, wool socks, a warm hat, mittens and a neck warmer, and check which outer gear your itinerary provides for activities. In summer, pack light layers, a rain jacket, insect repellent for the lakes and forests, and an eye mask for the midnight sun.
Food & drink
Look out for creamy salmon soup, Karelian rye pastries, sautéed reindeer in Lapland and cinnamon buns with strong coffee, which Finns drink in quantity. Tap water is excellent and safe to drink. Drinks stronger than 8% are sold only in the state-run Alko shops.
Safety
Finland is a very safe country to travel in. In winter the main considerations are the cold and the ice, so dress in layers, follow your guide's instructions on husky and outdoor activities, and take care on frozen pavements.
Frequently asked questions
Are Finland tours fully guided?
Most Finland tours are Lapland winter packages that are semi-independent or partially guided, with set activities led by local guides and free time in between. A few are fully guided throughout, including Lapland Adventure & Glass Igloo (five days), the Finnish Lakeland Aurora & Husky Adventure (five days) and Helsinki Highlights & Baltic Capitals (nine days). Private trips are self-guided, with hotels and transfers arranged.
What is included on a Lapland tour?
Lapland packages usually include accommodation, breakfasts and a set program of activities, typically a husky safari, a reindeer sleigh ride and an aurora outing. Rovaniemi group tours such as the Rovaniemi Winter Adventure (five days) also visit Santa Claus Village and Ranua Zoo. Airport transfers are included on most semi-independent packages but not on every group tour, so check each itinerary.
Where can I stay in a glass igloo in Finland?
Several Rovaniemi trips include igloo nights. Lapland Adventure & Glass Igloo and the Aurora & Glass Igloo Explorer (both five days) include one night in a glass igloo, while the private Lapland Winter Getaway & Igloo (five days) includes two. The Finland Wilderness Discovery (Igloo) stays in aurora cabin igloos for four nights, and the Yllas Aurora & Wilderness Deluxe (Glass Ceiling) uses glass ceiling rooms in Ylläs.
When can you see the northern lights in Finland?
In Lapland the northern lights can appear from around September to March, whenever skies are dark and clear. February and March pair strong aurora chances with longer daylight for activities. Most Lapland tours include an evening aurora outing to get away from the city lights, and glass igloo stays let you watch the sky from bed.
Are there family and Christmas tours in Finland?
Yes. The Lapland Family Explorer (five days) includes Santa Claus Village, a husky safari and a reindeer farm visit, and the Finland Family Winter Escape (eight days) provides Arctic clothing for snowshoeing, skiing and husky mushing near Kuusamo. At Christmas, the Santa Claus Express Helsinki to Lapland (seven days) travels north by overnight train, and Christmas in Finland (seven days) offers a traditional festive stay in Kuhmo.
Can I combine Finland with other countries?
Yes, Helsinki is the starting point for several multi-country tours. Helsinki Highlights & Baltic Capitals (nine days) crosses by ferry to Tallinn and continues through Latvia and Lithuania. Finland, Baltics & Poland (10 days) adds Poland, and Helsinki to Copenhagen (11 days) ends in Denmark. The Norway, Sweden & Finland Explorer (11 days) runs from Oslo to Helsinki.
How many days do you need in Finland?
Most Lapland breaks run four to five days, which is enough for the main winter activities and a couple of aurora chances. Christmas and New Year stays usually run five to seven days. For the south, Cities of South Finland (eight days) links Helsinki, Turku and Tampere by train.
When is the best time to visit Finland?
December to March is the best time for Lapland, with deep snow, husky and reindeer rides and the northern lights, and Christmas and New Year are the busiest weeks. June to August brings the midnight sun and long, mild days for Helsinki, Turku and Tampere. September is a quieter shoulder month, with autumn colors and the aurora returning.
