Bentota is famous for its pristine beaches and earned a notable position in the Forbes Best Beaches in Asia Awards in 2010. This is even more impressive considering this was one of the beaches damaged by the 2004 tsunami. Backed by the Bentota Lagoon the area offers a whole host of watersports including water skiing, snorkelling, scuba diving, parasailing, fishing and surfing. Bentota has a great selection of upmarket hotels and villas, many designed by local architect Geoffrey Bawa. Bentota is also famed for the famous jeweller Aida, the production of a Toddy (a coconut nectar based alcoholic beverage) and the world famous ancient art of healing called Ayurveda.
North of Bentota is the attractive beach of Beruwala that stretches 130km. The beachfront has undergone extensive redevelopment in recent years resulting in a fantastic choice of accommodation. Beruwala town is of particular historical significance for that fact that Sri Lanka's first Muslims settled here and it's home to the country's oldest mosque - the Kechimalai Mosque. Many Muslims still reside in the area and make their living as gem merchants in the China Fort area.
