Welcome to Mumbai and the start of your India holiday with us. After you have passed through customs and baggage collection we will be there to meet you and transfer you to your hotel.
Today, we visit Kanchipuram, one of sacred cities in India plus also the seaside town of Mahabalipuram, famous for its shore temple. The city is also famous for handwoven silk. In Mahabalipuram, the huge rock-cut sculptures and mandapams (pillared pavilions) date from the 5th to 8th centuries.
This morning we will drive you to Pondicherry and transfer you to your hotel. A former French colony, Pondicherry has a Mediterranean aura - whitewashed residences, ornamental gardens and excellent French-Indian restaurants. Many travellers come to visit the popular Sri Aurobindo Ashram, which combines yoga and modern science. Enjoy an afternoon sightseeing tour.
Today we continue south and arrive at Tanjore. Our city tour includes the enormous Brihadishwara Temple. The World Heritage protected temple has a dome weighing an estimated 80 tonnes which was hauled into place along an earth ramp in a manner similar to that used for the Egyptian pyramids.
This morning we will take you on a short drive to Trichy. Trichy has been ravaged by war through the centuries. A lasting legacy is the Rock Fort and its temples. Enjoy some exploration of the fort and temples on our afternoon tour.
This morning, we arrive in Madurai. A bustling city jam-packed with rickshawallas, pilgrims and traders and resembling a seemingly continuous bazaar. We have a sightseeing tour and highlights include the Sri Meenakshi Temple built in 1560 and the city’s busy bazaars.
The journey continues to Periyar which has south India’s most popular wildlife sanctuary and home to sambar wild boar, elephant, bison, antelope, langur and a small tiger population. Enjoy some rest and relaxation.
Today you will enjoy a tranquil boat ride, drift silently along the water's of Lake Periyar, spotting wild elephent herds and many of the varied wildlife the park has to offer, continuing on that theme you will also enjoy a guided nature walk this afternoon.
Perched on the eastern banks of Lake Vembanad in the heartland of Kerala’s famed backwaters, Kumarakom has changed little since the Middle Ages but for it’s string of exotic resorts, making it the perfect point to explore the backwaters. Although right in the thick of a tangle of lush tropical waterways, Kumarakom is technically an island on Lake Vembanad.
This morning board a simply furnished private rice boat for a journey through the backwaters in and around Alleppey. Crewed by a poler to push the rice boat through the water, a distance of some 20 kms will be covered, during which time the boat will glide past colourful local villages. The on board cook will prepare meals using fresh local produce.
After breakfast, you'll disembark from the houseboat and be transferred to your hotel in Kochi. This afternoon, enjoy a sightseeing tour of the town including the Synagogue, Dutch Palace and St Francis' Church. In the evening you will be treated to a traditional Kathkali dance performance.
A free day to enjoy this commercial city, also called “The Queen of the Arabian Sea”. The Indian Navy, the port and airport share the mainly manmade Willingdon Island. Wander through the streets still graced with traces of Portuguese, Dutch & British colonial architecture, including a few old trading factories, the only ones still standing anywhere in the world.
