About Karak

Sitting atop a hill and looming down on the surrounding houses of Karak are the crumbling remnants of what was once a magnificent castle. This ancient relic played a vital role in the shaping of history as it was the place where the future of various kings and nations were decided for thousands of years. It was one of the castles that was established during the crusades and was known as a Crusader stronghold. Furthermore, the city of Karak is mentioned in the bible on more than one occasion and it is written that here is where the Syrians stopped before they finally settled in the North of Levant. This wonderful site is often skipped out by travellers, who overlook it in favour of Petra, but Karak is more than deserving of a bit of attention.

The castle represents a sterling example of Crusader architecture and is reinforced with vaults and extra-strong doorways. The white limestone areas of the castle are later additions, contributed by the Arabs that took over. Within the castle grounds are the remains of what used to be a majestic chapel, installed by the Crusaders. From here, spectacular views over Jordan all the way to the Dead Sea can be had.
