Day 7: Lake Baikal
Irkutsk & Lake Baikal - Morning arrival in Irkutsk - a town with Asiatic influences of nearby Mongolia and China and curious architecture - a legacy of Siberia's aristocratic exiles. Transfer to nearby Listvyanka. Offering stunning views of Baikal - Siberia's inland sea, Listvyanka is our year-round base. Enjoy lunch and a guided walk along the shores, including a visit to the Baikal Lake museum. Siberian banya (sauna), lunch, supper & overnight - homestay.

Days 8 & 9: Irkutsk
Irkutsk & Lake Baikal - breakfast. Choose one of the optional activities. Lunch - (1), supper & overnight (2) - homestay.

Day 10: Train
Irkutsk - Ulaan Baatar - breakfast. Transfer to rail station for travel to Ulaan Baatar. Overnight - train.

Days 11 & 12 - Terelj National Park
Ulaan Baatar - Terelj NP - Morning arrival and transfer to centre. Time to freshen up, before later driving to Terelj. It doesn’t get much more exotic than Mongolia. Located in the landlocked plateau between Russian Siberia and the plains of northern China, Mongolia is a land of endless steppe, towering mountains, pristine lakes, rivers and desert. The Mongolian ger is a sturdy wood and felt type tent. Ger means ‘home’ and it is home during our stay on the steppe. Lunch, dinner and overnight (2) - Mongolian ger camp.

*Please note: Due to extreme weather, clients undertaking a classic adventure during the winter will be accommodated in permanent accommodation and not Mongolian gers.

Day 13: Ulaan Baatar
Terelj NP - Ulaan Baatar - breakfast. Transfer to Ulaan Baatar. Laid-back and provincial Ulaan Baatar is set in the rolling foothills of the Bogd mountain range, on the banks of the Tuul River. The pine-covered mountains, wide boulevards, vast public squares and park give the city a feeling of spaciousness, while the ger communities, Buddhist temples and bustling market places give it a rustic charm. The city hubbub is Sükhbaatar Square. The Museum of Natural History is minutes away. The Gobi Desert is famous for its archaelogical finds from the Mesozoic Era. The Buddhist Temple of Gandantegchinlen Khiid and the Winter Palace of Bogd Khaan are also worth a look. Dinner and overnight - hotel.

Day 14: Train
Ulaan Baatar - Beijing - breakfast. Morning transfer to rail station for train to Beijing. Overnight - train.

Day 15: Beijing
Beijing - Today marks the end of your momentous train journey. Passing through the Shanxi province en route to the nations capital. Arrival into Beijing this afternoon.

NOTE:
Flights, visas and entrance fees not included. No meals aboard the train. Click here for visa information.

In Russia on the go use 3 star accommodation as classified by the Russian Ministry of Tourism. However, please be aware that the 3 star standards throughout Russia vary greatly and cannot be compared to hotels of a similar standard in Western Europe or, and in particular, the United States.

Homestays - Our homestays vary, you may be staying with a local family, couple or single person. In some cases the home owner may actually move out so that you have the house to yourself. The local homes we use are generally very simple and basic with shared bathroom facilities. Please note that if you are travelling in a larger group it may be necessary for you to stay in separate houses because most homes are small and only have room for one or two guests.
