The city of Udaipur is perhaps one of India's most seductive. Known as the City of Lakes or the Venice of the East, Udaipur is the historic capital of the Rajput kingdom of Mewar and is known for its splendid Rajput-era palaces. Its centrepiece is the gorgeous Lake Pichola and the incredible Lake Palace that appears to float on the surface of the water. Famously used in the James Bond Octopussy film, the Lake Palace was originally built as a summer palace in 1743 and features floors inlaid with black and white marble and walls ornamented with different precious stones. Today the Lake Palace is a luxury hotel, voted as one of the most romantic in India.
An evening boat ride on Lake Pichola is a must for any visit to Udaipur though the city has plenty more to offer. Explore the largest palace complex in Rajasthan - the City Palace, with a museum displaying lavish mosaics of peacocks, beautiful mirrorwork and ornamental tiles. Situated on the east bank of Lake Pichola, the City Palace provides wonderful panoramic views across the lake from the many balconies. Overlooking all of the city's lakes is the hilltop palatial residence of the Monsoon Palace, built to enable Rajastani royalty to watch the monsoon clouds. Today it's the perfect place to visit for stunning sunset views of Udaipur.
Other sights in Udaipur include the handsome 18th century haveli museum of Bagore-ki-haveli, the wonderfully carved Jagdish Temple and the Ahar Museum featuring over 250 restored empty Maharaja tombs. However, few visitors make the most of the surrounding rural beauty and the Aravalli hills and those with more time may want to consider horse safaris into the countryside or day excursions by car or motorbike.
