The Eagle Dome of Umayyad Mosque in Damascus

Damascus

Reputedly the oldest inhabited city in the world, Damascus, the capital of Syria is a charismatic and bustling place studded with rich examples of Islamic and Ottoman architecture. Off Straight Street, the main thoroughfare of Damascus since Graeco-Roman times, the Old City is further dissected by dozens of interesting streets housing mosques; the city’s labyrinthine souk just south of the citadel where anything from fresh juice and hot corn to carved furniture, swords and shisha smoking pipes can be bought, elegant bathhouses, grand residences of former pashas and the amazing Azem Palace. Included is a visit to a traditional hamam. We also leave a day free for you to further explore the city or opt to head to your choice of Krac des Chevaliers - an ancient crusader castle and Ma’alula, an old Christian village where locals still speak Aramaic, the language of Christ OR to the Roman oasis town of Palmyra.
