Although the ending wasn’t everyone’s cup of tea, Game of Thrones remains one of the biggest television shows in history, watched by millions. The original books by George RR Martin continue to sell in droves, and the stars of the TV show, such as Emilia Clarke, Kit Harrington, and Sophie Turner, have gone on to become household names. Another effect of Games of Thrones-mania has been to draw attention to one of the show’s main filming locations, the captivating walled city of Dubrovnik in Croatia.
The city was featured throughout the television show as Kings Landing, capital of the fantasy world of Westeros. Even though it has been several years since the show ended, Game of Thrones continues to drive visitors to Dubrovnik, with many of the city’s sights having been featured in the show. In this article, we’ll show you some of the main Dubrovnik Game of Thrones filming locations used in the show.
This fortress is situated just outside the western wall of Old Town Dubrovnik and served as the imposing Red Keep in King's Landing. It was prominently featured in various scenes, including the iconic Battle of Blackwater Bay.
The Jesuit Staircase, located near Gundulic Square in Old Town Dubrovnik, was used in Game of Thrones for the iconic scene known as the "Walk of Shame," featuring Cersei Lannister. The grand staircase provided a dramatic backdrop for this pivotal moment in the series.
Pile Bay is located just outside the western entrance to Old Town and was utilized for various scenes set in the King's Landing harbor. It served as a departure point for characters leaving the city and featured prominently in several episodes. The most notable of which was when the Lannisters said goodbye to Myrcella as she sailed for Dorne.
Situated within Old Town Dubrovnik, the Ethnographic Museum Rupe was used for interior shots, including the brothel frequented by Tyrion Lannister. Its historic architecture and atmospheric interiors added authenticity to the scenes set in King's Landing.
Although our Croatia itineraries do not include dedicated Game of Thrones sightseeing tours, on trips that include guided sightseeing, you will see many of the sites highlighted in this article and more that are not! Your guide will have an awareness of the sights that featured in the series and will point these out. And on most trips, you will enjoy free time in Dubrovnik, during which you are more than welcome to book your own Game of Thrones tour with one of the many licensed operators that trade in the city.
Although this walled city is renowned as a Game of Thrones filming location, it is far from the only place on our Croatia tours that starred in the series. The former summer home of the Roman Emperor Diocletian in Split also featured in the series, starring as the slave city of Mereen, which was conquered by Daenarys Targaryen. The Cathedral of St. James in Sibenik featured in series 5 as the Iron Bank in Braavos. And Lokrum, a small island off the coast of Dubrovnik, also featured. According to legend, heroic English king Richard the Lionheart was shipwrecked here on his return from fighting on crusade, but in Game of Thrones, the island is where Dany’s scenes were filmed as she met the Spice King in Qarth.
If you book a Croatia tour with On The Go Tours, then yes, you will be able to see many of the Game of Thrones filming locations in Dubrovnik and beyond. But there’s more!
