The best time to travel to Central America

In general temperatures in Central America follow the same pattern as Northern Hemisphere; cooler in the winter (December-January) and warmer in the summer months (June-August), although the hottest time of year is just before the rains come, between March and May, when it can be very hot and humid.

Central America experiences a rainy season which starts in May/June and continues through to September/October. During this period temperatures remain high and although it rains every day, downpours don't tend to be prolonged. There is also a hurricane season on the Caribbean side of Central America and the Gulf of Mexico which runs from September to November. However this usually only means high winds and occasional storms. Given the vast expanse of Central America there are of course country variations in climate and temperature which are specified below.

Mexico Climate

Mexico is a year-round destination with little variation in temperature through the months. The rainy season between May and September brings the highest amount of precipitation with the rest of the year quite dry. During this season the coastal and low-lying regions are hot and humid. The centre and north of the country enjoys a more temperate climate and can be quite cool during the months of November to February.

Costa Rica Climate

For a small country, Costa Rica experiences a surprising range of climatic conditions. Low temperatures affect the highlands, the cloud forest is cool with clouds of mist, the Central Valley is blessed with year-round spring-like conditions whilst the coastal regions are hot and steamy throughout the year. The dry season from December to April is generally the best time to visit with far less rain throughout the Central Valley region.

Guatemala Climate

Generally speaking, there is no bad time to visit Guatemala though the rainy season between May and October can make travelling a little difficult and bring the mosquitoes and humidity. The dry season from November to April means sweltering hot temperatures in the lowland jungles and coastal regions and pleasantly warm days in the highlands. Cool nights and mornings are typical of December through to February along with clear and sunny days.

Panama Climate

The dry season between December and April is considered the best time to visit Panama with little rain in Panama City and the Pacific side of the country - the Caribbean side experiences rain year-round though in short, heavy bursts typical of the tropics. Temperatures along the coast remain constantly high throughout the year whereas the highlands can get quite a bit cooler during the dry season.

Honduras Climate

Temperatures vary very little with the seasons - what matters is the elevation. The coastal lowlands are hot and humid throughout the year whilst the mountainous interior has a more marked variation in temperatures with it being warmer during the dry season between February and June. The rainy season hits the interior of the country between May and November and the coast from September to January. Hurricanes are most likely in September and October sending heavy rains over the country.

Belize Climate

The climate in Belize is hot and humid all year round with temperatures cooling off slightly between November and January. The wet season affects the country between mid-May to November with the real dry season falling between February and April - generally the best time to visit. Since there is generally little change in elevation between the coast and the interior of the country, there is little variation in temperature though the coastal regions tend

to be warmer.
