Day 1: La Paz
Welcome to Bolivia and the start of your holiday. Today is an arrival day with no activities planned, arrive at any time and transfer to your hotel.
Take the time to acclimatize to the altitude, and explore La Paz on foot. Sites of note include the Witches Market, Palacio Legislativo, 1835 Cathedral and Museo National del Arte. Overnight - La Paz.
Day 2: La Paz
Transfer to the airport for the flight to Sucre. With its landscaped plazas, white-washed buildings and numerous decorative churches, take the time to discover the rich colonial heritage of Bolivia’s judicial capital. Overnight - Sucre.
Day 3: Sucre
A major Bolivian University town, Sucre is the cultural centre of the country. The city possesses many museums, quality restaurants and relaxing cafés. Today is free to enjoy any of these as you wish, or take one of the optional excursions - visit the Dinosaur Tracks at Cal Orcko, an old tin baron’s mansion, mountain biking or hiking. Overnight - Sucre.
Day 4: Potosi
The world’s highest city and the site for one of the world’s longest continually operated and most prosperous silver mines, the UNESCO-listed city of Potosi bares both the fruits and scars of this legacy. Not for the claustrophobic, take the chance to descend down a working mine and witness the harsh working conditions endured by the indigenous population and African slaves; an estimated 8 million people died in the mines. Overnight - Potosi.
Day 5: Altiplano/Uyuni
Travel through the Antiplano to Uyuni, our starting point for the Salt Flats tour. Overnight - Salar de Uyuni.
Days 6 - 8: Uyuni/Salt lakes
Breakfast. We begin our 3 night 4x4 tour of the world’s largest salt flats - the Salar de Uyuni. At 12 000sq km and a height of 3653m, this sparse landscape hides many beautiful sights and an array of wildlife. Depending on the time of year, the salt pans are either dry and blindingly white, or water-logged providing perfect mirror images of the sky and clouds above. Travelling on the maze of tracks which criss-cross this surreal and treeless landscape, we visit an array of settlements and sites. Amongst others, these include Laguna Colorada - a bright red lake fringed with encrusted white minerals, a 4950m Geyser Basin with boiling mud pots and geyers and the numerous hot springs of Termas de Polques. There will also be the chance to spot flamingos, llama’s and owls. Lunch, dinner and overnight (3) - Salar de Uyuni
Day 9: Uyuni/La Paz
Return to Uynuni for the night bus and then train back to La Paz. We arrive by 12pm on day 10.
Day 10: La Paz
Remainder of day is free for one last look at La Paz. Perhaps there will be time to visit Tiahuanaco? Situated just outside La Paz, this pre-Inca ruin is Bolivia’s most significant archaeological site. Though little is known about the people who settled in the area, there are a number of restored megaliths strewn around, which are estimated at over 1000 years old. Overnight - La Paz.
Day 11: La Paz
Depart at any time today.
