Starts: Guangzhou Ends: Hong Kong
Sitting on Pearl River, vibrant and lively Guangzhou, or formally Canton, the capital of Guangdong Province is the closest big city to Hong Kong and like Hong Kong, a Special Economic Zone aided by foreign and Chinese investment. Colonised by Emperor Qin in 221 BC, the Portuguese were first in a long line of foreign traders to do business here. Famed for it’s cuisine (Cantonese, no less) and also the riverfront shops at Yangjiang Road, Guangzhou itself also offers a swag of attractions including Shamian Island; the former foreign enclave which remains a small village with grandiose colonial buildings, Chen Family Temple, the tomb of the King of Southern Yue, parks, gardens and markets. Qingping Market is perhaps one of the most fascinating food markets in China. Every imaginable foodstuff is sold at Qingping. Don’t ‘canton’ your desire. En route to Hong Kong, drop into Guangzhou!
