Passage to Tibet - 8 days

Locked away in its Himalayan fortress, the 'rooftop of the world' is continuing to welcome intrepid visitors. Our passage to Tibet incorporates awesome locations such as Lhasa, the capital which is home to the famous Potala Palace, Zhangmu, Xegar, Shigatse and Gyantse.

Day 1: Kathmandu
Kathmandu - Zhangmu. Early morning drive to Kodari. After completing immigration and custom formalities drive uphill to Zhangmu immigration Post. Complete custom formalities and check into hotel. Overnight - Zhangmu
Day 2: Beautiful Scenery
Zhangmu - Xegar. Drive to Xegar crossing Nyalamu Pass (3800m) & Lalung La Pass (5050M). This drive offers fantastic view of the high mountains including Everest. Overnight - Xegar (B)

Day 3: Shigatse
Xegar - Shigatse. Drive to Shigatse through stunning scenery. Shigatse has the famous Tashilunpo Monastery and the seat of Panchen Lama. Overnight - Shigatse (B)
Day 4:
Shigatse - Gyantse. In the morning visit Tashilunpo Monastery and the free market of Shigatse. In the afternoon drive to Gyantse and visit Phalkor Monastery and Khumbum Stupa. Overnight - Gyantse (B)

Day 5: Lhasa
Gyantse - Lhasa. Drive to Lhasa via The Kato La and Kamba La passes and Yamdrok Tso lake. Overnight - Lhasa (B)
Days 6 - 7: Tour of Lhasa
Enjoy sightseeing in the capital of Tibet, also the traditional seat of the Dalai Lama. Your sightseeing will include Potala Palace, Norbulingka, Jokhang Temple, Sera monastery, Drepung monastery, Tsurpu monastery and Gyantse. Potala Palace is the dominant landmark of Lhasa 117 meters above the city below. Construction started on the red hill in 1645 under the 5th Dalai Lama. An immense building, 13 storeys high with walls 3 meters thick Containing over 1000 rooms, 10,000 shrines and 200,000 statues it was both the residence of the current Dalai Lama and tomb of the former Heads of state. The entire building is made of stone and wood and covers an area of 130,000 square meters. The Potala is full of elaborate art work and frescos that tell many stories. Day 8: Fly back to Kathmandu
Lhasa - Kathmandu. Transfer to Gonggar airport for your flight to Kathmandu. Please note: This flight only operates on Tuesdays & Saturdays. (B)

Local conditions

Accommodation used is modest in standard and not rated by the usual star category system. Travel in Tibet can be hampered by bad roads, many of which are unsealed. The high altitude can create discomfort for travellers who may have pre-existing conditions affecting their circulatory, respiratory or cardiac system.
