north east india tours North east India consists of the contiguous Seven Sister States - Arunachal Pradesh, Assam, Meghalaya, Manipur, Mizoram, Nagaland and Tripura plus the state of Sikkim. Further states south of this region include West Bengal, whose capital is Kolkata (Calcutta) and the state of Orissa.
The ethnic and religious diversity that characterises these seven states sets them apart from the rest of India. For most of their history they were independent. Whilst the names of these states offer little clue to their attractions, individual locations like Darjeeling and Kolkata start firing the imagination of this less-visted and under-rated region of India.
Explore the quaint hill station and verdent tea plantations of Darjeeling and Buddhist monastries in Gangtok and Pelling, Sikkim.
Consider a sojourn in India’s cultural capital, Kolkata (Calcutta) erstwhile capital of British India. Further south is Orissa. Explore the curiously named capital Bhubaneshwar and its many temples; visit Puri and the famed Jagannath Temple and the great Sun Temple at Konark. Rural Orissa offers tribal villages steeped in tradition, ancient handicrafts and impossibly attractive scenery.
It’s possible to enjoy the North East of India on our Kolkata to Darjeeling and Explore Orissa tours.
