Day 1: Chennai
Welcome to India and the start of your holiday - this is for Julia and Lily only! Arrive Chennai, included transfer to hotel.
Day 2: Chennai
Welcome to India and the start of your holiday - for Patricia, Sharon, Dorothy and Therese. Arrive Chennai, included transfer to hotel.
Day 3: Chennai
Morning after breakfast enjoy a tour of the city that includes a vist to St George Fort, built in 1653 and St Mary’s Church, the oldest British church in India.
Day 4: Chennai - Mahabalipuram
Morning leaving Chennai we visit visit Kanchipuram, one of sacred cities in India and the seaside town of Mahabalipuram, famous for its shore temple. The city is also famous for handwoven silk. In Mahabalipuram, the huge rock-cut sculptures and mandapams (pillared pavilions) date from the 5th to 8th centuries. Check into your hotel.
Day 5: Mahabalipuram - Trichy
Morning we drive and visit Tanjore, also known as Thanjavur, Tanjore is an ancient fortified town, with a glorious history dating back more than 1500 years. Onward drive to Trichy arrival and check into your hotel.
Day 6: Trichy - Madurai
Take a morning sightseeing tour of Trichy before the journey continues south to Madurai. An important centre for worship and commerce, Madurai has been around since the dawn of civilisation in southern India. Arrival check in and free time to explore.
Day 7: Madurai
Morning tour highlights include the Sri Meenakshi Temple built in 1560 and the city’s busy bazaars. Evening free time we recommend you witness a religious ceremony at a local temple.
Day 8: Madurai - Periyar NP
The journey continues to Periyar which has south India’s most popular wildlife sanctuary and home to sambar wild boar, elephant, bison, antelope, langur and a small tiger population. Kumily, close to the sanctuary and where you’ll stay, is a pretty town dotted with small spice and handicraft shops.
Day 9: Periyar NP
There is plenty to do in and around Periyar. So free time to book and pay locally for excursions such as a boat ride on Lake Periyar to spot herds of wild elephants or visit the nearby tea estates and spice plantation.
Day 10: Periyar NP - Alleppey
This morning, you’ll board a traditional Keralan rice boat for a journey through the backwaters in and around Allapuzha (Alleppey). The boat will cross shallow, palm-fringed lakes and cruise along peaceful canals where copra and cashews are loaded onto local boats. The on-board cook will prepare locally-inspired food. Relax, read and catch some sun as the boat plies it’s route.
Day 11: Alleppey - Mararikulam
Disembarking at Allepey today we drive to Mararikulam for your relaxing beach stay.
Day 13: Mararikulam - Kochi
Morning drive to Kochi. This afternoon enjoy a sightseeing tour of the town including the beautiful Parsi Synagogue built in 1568, the Dutch Palace built by the Portuguese in 1555 and St Francis’ Church. A walking tour of Fort Cochin takes you through streets still graced with traces of Portuguese, Dutch and British colonial architecture.
Day 14: Kochi - Aurangabad
Transfer to airport for flight to Aurangabad via Mumbai. Arrive Aurangabad and our rep will transfer you to your hotel. Evening at leisure.
Day 15: Aurangabad
Full day touring the UNESCO World Heritage Listed Buddhist caves of Ajanta which cut from the volcanic lava.
Day 16: Aurangabad - Mumbai
Morning tour to the UNESCO World Heritage Listed Ellora caves comprising of 34 cave temples dedicated to three different religions - Hinduism, Buddhism and Jainism. Then we head back to the airport for your flight to Mumbai (AI 441, 1710/1805) Arrival transfer to your hotel.
Day 17: Mumbai
Today we embark on a glittering city tour, with a morning visit to the cave temples of Elephanta Island sculpted during the 5th to the 8th centuries. In the afternoon visit the Prince of Wales museum, Marine Drive and the Mani Bhawan Jain temple.
Day 18: Mumbai - Udaipur
Transfer to airport for flight to Udaipur -(AI 472, 1105 - 1220) Arrive Udaipur, and your rep will transfer you to your hotel
Day 19: Udaipur
Today enjoy touring of the imposing City Palace and in the later afternoon we’ll enjoy a cruise on Lake Pichola. Evening at leisure.
Day 20: Udaipur - Jaipur
Today we have a long but as always in India an interesting road trip driving to Jaipur (7-8 hours) stops can be made at your discretion to get food or refreshments. Arrival Jaipur check into your hotel then free time to relax.
Day 21: Jaipur
This morning, we travel beyond Jaipur to the 16th century Amber Fort. An exotic elephant ride transports us to the lofty fort, where we’ll enjoy a tour of this Rajput extravaganza. Why not bolt on an early morning amazing hot air balloon ride? Later in the afternoon we tour the City Palace, which boasts an interesting museum of regal attire and Jantar Mantar, an ancient astronomical observatory.
Day 22: Jaipur - Agra
Driving to Agra we stop to visit the ghostly former Mughal city of Fatehpur Sikri, abandoned due to lack of water. Arrival into Agra we visit the Agra fort and then sunset guided tour of the Taj with free time to explore. Evening at leisure.
Day 23: Agra - Khajuraho
Today, we travel by express train to Jhansi and drive onward to Khajuraho - home of the resplendent Hindu temples which were built during the Chandela dynasty over a 100 year burst of creative genius from 950-1050 AD. Enjoy an afternoon tour of the site. Evening at leisure.
Day 24: Khajuraho - Varanasi
Morning free time to see the temples again then a transfer to the airport for your flight to Varanasi (9W 724, 1325/1415) Arrive Varanasi and we transfer you to your hotel. This evening your guide will take you to the riverside steps to see the ritual worship of the holy river Ganges.
Day 25: Varanasi
This morning, we enjoy a sunrise boat ride on the holy Ganges where we’ll view the ancient religious tradition of ritual cleansing that takes place on the many riverbank ghats (riverside steps). Afternoon touring of Sarnath which was where Lord Buddha gave his first sermons. Evening at leisure.
Day 26: Varanasi - Delhi
Morning we embark on a tour of the city. After it is off to the airport for your flight to Delhi. Arrival transfer to your hotel.
Day 27: Delhi
Today we explore both Old and New Delhi - the order of New Delhi is a huge contrast to the unorganised chaos of the Old City. But both are just as appealing. Highlights we be the impressive Red Fort, Jama Masjid - India’s oldest and largest mosque, Raj Ghat - the site of Gandhi’s cremation and more.
Day 28: Delhi
In the very early hours today, we will transfer you to the airport in time for your departure flight.
