The Trans Siberian is so much more than just a train ride! Half the fun of the journey is the time off the train, experiencing local cultures and lifestyles, all adding up to an epic adventure - which one will you choose?

Make the most of your time in Yekaterinburg and Irkutsk by choosing one of our 11 optional activities that most appeals to you. The 'Summer trek & camp', 'Summer lake & village' and 'Khasi dog sledding' options are free of charge. If you do not want to do this option, simply choose one of the others available at the featured price. Please specify your preference at time of booking.

Yekaterinburg - Route of the Romanovs


Option 1: - Summer lake & village - free

We travel to Peschanoe Lake and walk along the river banks, taking in the breathtaking views, before heading to the ancient Ural village of Koptelovo, based in 17th century and still keeping the ancient way of life. Russian wooden houses, made without nails, are still used today. Fitness level: medium, offered during the summer.

 



Option 2: Khaski dog sledding - free
You will be accompanied by a skilled instructor who will explain how to manage the dogs and sled and then it is up to you to take control! This is an experience of a lifetime, as you see the snowy landscape as the dogs race along. You will be supplied with sheepskin coats and warm overalls. Offered during the winter.

 


Option 3: Horse sledding & village
Travel to the ancient Ural village of Koptelovo, based in 17th century and still keeping the ancient way of life. We explore the wooden houses and try a traditional Ural mountain lunch of potato pies, a local delicacy. En route we stop to go horse sledding. Try this for action!



Option 4: Skiing
Ezhovaya mountain has fantastic slopes for skiing (1500m) and 7 modern lifts. At the bottom of mountain there is a point of hire of mountain-skiing equipment, snowmobiles, a skiing school for those who need the help of a lesson or two! The views are stunning and this is one of the best areas to ski in the Middle Urals.



Option 5: Catamaran rafting
Middle-level rafting on catamarans along the quiet rivers - either Chusovaia or Serga, which flow between the Ural mountains. Picturesque views along the way of the mountains, rocky foreshores and even a chance to catch fish and pick up mushrooms and berries for dinner. All the necessary equipment is provided. Offered in the summer.



Option 6: Falcon hunting
The bird rehabilitation and monitoring center has many kinds of birds such as falcons, steppe eagles and quails. After seeing the mini bird zoo, the hunting show commences. You will be shown the ancient technique of the hunt: taking off and landing on your hand, attach on a stuffed animal and how the bird's flight is controlled.


Lake Baikal, Olkhon Island & the Irkutsk region
 


Option 1: Summer trek & camp - free
Day 1 - Trekking through the stunning taiga of the surrounding Primorsky Mountain to a nearby bay on the shores of Lake Baikal. Camp overnight. All meals.

Day 2 - Trekking back to Listvyanka, lunch stop en route. Return to Irkutsk. Supper & overnight - homestay. Fitness level - good to high.

 



Option 2: Year-round fun

Day 1 - Boat to Port Baikal. Summer - trekking on Circum-Baikal route and picnic. Winter - frozen lake walking & lunch. Return to Listvyanka. Siberian banya (sauna), supper & overnight - homestay.

Day 2 - Return to Irkutsk. Lunch, supper and overnight - homestay. Fitness level - medium.

 


Option 3: Summer Lake diving
Day 1 - Canyons, caves, vertical drops & an abundance of marine life! Dive the abyss. 2 dives with all necessary equipment. Lunch, supper & overnight - homestay.

Day 2 - Trekking back to Irkutsk. Supper & overnight - homestay. Fitness level - good to high. (PADI cert. required).

 

 


Option 4: Winter Ski Baikal
Day 1 - Guided cross-country skiing (3 hours) in the Taiga forest or on the frozen expanse of Lake Baikal. Siberian banya (sauna), supper & overnight - homestay.

Day 2 - Return to Irkutsk via Taltsy - Museum of wooden architecture. Enjoy also a short Troika ride. Lunch, dinner & overnight - homestay. Fitness level - high.

 

 

Option 5: Snow mobile Baikal
Day 1 - First up is a driving lesson, then its off to practice your newly learned skills on a ride to a small village not far from Listvyanka. Stop for a traditional style lunch, then ride back to Listvyanka for a banya (Russian sauna) and dinner.

Day 2 - Breakfast and transfer onward to Irkutsk. Lunch, dinner & overnight - Irkutsk Fitness level - high.
